    Dining Room Table Project

I had an idea to make a dining room table...my wife thought I was out of my mind. I know my way around metalwork, but I've never done any real woodwork.

After digging around, I was able to source a nice oak slab that could be trimmed down to 32"x82"x3" The stress cracks in the slab were filled with resin and sanded down. Then I bedded a 2" bar stock into the table top. The bar stock was leftover material from my FIL's metal shop that was closed down after he died of brain cancer almost nine years ago.

The base for the table was fabricated using I-beam and square tubing.

Cutting the grove to bed the 2" bar stock

    Test fitting the bar stock

I stamped our names into the bar stock before bedding it to the table top with resin

I debated on what product to use for the finish, but opted for this stuff

    This is the finished table

At first I wanted to do a picnic bench, but our house lacks a lot of comfortable seating so we are going to go with padded chairs.

You did a great job! I love these kind of DIY threads. Where did you get the wood from? I have a table in mind but need older barn wood with splits in it.

I sourced it from a guy in Weatherford, TX. He only handles new stuff.

Incredible, absolutely love the base. Would like to see what chairs you end up going with.

Man that’s too cool... The fact that you built it and incorporated some sentimental materials makes it priceless.
