NWS is calling for a period of all snow for Val Verde County on Thursday morning. I hunt Val Verde/Terrell County areas and I sure wish I was going this week.

I don't think it will. Looks like sunny and a high of 52 on Friday at Pumpville, which is closest to me. The low Friday morning will be about 32. The bucks will be up and running for sure.

Good thing I've already killed my mature buck and can only kill culls. I knew this week would be better. I've been tracking my big buck kills for about 20 years now and they've all been killed in the Dec. 6-13 time frame. I don't know why I HAD to go the lease last weekend.

Good luck!

Got my euros back. Local guy in tomball did a great job for next to nothing. I highly recommend Natural Impressions for euros if you're in the area.

The rutting activity was crazy last week ! I was in awe at the amount of chasing and tending going on at our place.
Wednesday through Saturday it was chilly, snowy, icy.

A fight over corn didnít end well for this lil fella !

This buck didnít leave this does side for like 3 days ......

Doesn't look like I'll make it back out until the weekend after Christmas or the final weekend. I could make it out the first weekend of spike and doe season I guess. I'm down to shooting culls anyway. I get two mature bucks so i let the GF use one of my allotment. And she shot a 9 that still had his milk teeth.

Not sure as to what stage the rut is in but there are defenitly some bucks still in rut. I saw several bucks pushing does including one chase that entailed swimming across the rio grande that buck wanted some action and the doe was not having it.

Oh ya Iím sure there are a few bucks still running. I was just thinking to myself there is no way they could sustain the craziness that was going on. Good Luck

The main rut is over at our place, 277/377 split area.

Had bucks running all over early in the week, watched one buck just lay down in the road to rest. He was out of gas, panting like a dog. Now the bucks are back at the feeders eating among the does without harrassing them.

This pic from last week. Don't see snow like this very often.

Anybody have recommendations for cell phone boosters? We have excellent AT&T service on about 1/2 of our lease. Zero service in our camphouse. If we walk out the door 100 yards it works perfect. We want to invest a good booster.

I have been out and about this last three days and have seen multiple bucks cruising in broad day light. I have never seen such an extended period for the rut.

I'm hoping to make it back out either the weekend after Christmas or the final weekend. If all else fails, I'll go back the first weekend of spike/doe season. I kinda hate to go during the spike/doe season because I always see the big ones then.

They seem to come out of hiding knowing they're not in danger anymore.

I'm down to shooting culls, sheep and pigs anyway. I let the GF shoot my other mature deer.

Did you get your booster yet? Did it help?
That was sure a nice buck your hunter killed. Wasn't that one supposed to walk out in front of you and pose for a shot?

I know y'all have feeder pens. If you had to build another one what kind of panels would you use?

We only need to exclude hogs. There aren't any livestock on our place.

We have mostly hot panels for our pens with a couple cattle panels mixed in. The smaller hogs get through the bigger holes on the cattle panels so we're gonna have to fix those this spring. All hog panels from now on. 9 panels is a great size.

There are goat panels. They have very small holes that make it less likely goats will decide to get their heads stuck in the panel and die at your feeder. But the last time I checked they're significantly more expensive than hog or cattle panels.

That sort of enters into it. It ends up being a big investment on a place that is leased.

That's true, but they are not permanent. Wire cutters and a tpost puller will take a pen down quickly. Then take the components to your next lease.

We havenít got a booster yet. Waiting until I get deposits gathered up from everyone for next year.

You have to use the panels with the 4x4 inch squares. They call them utility panels, and they come in 20 foot lengths. The first pens we built we bought the 48 inch tall ones, and found a couple dead deer hung in them a few months after we set them up. We cut them down to 40 inches and have had no problems since. I have also used the 36 inch tall panels and a select few of the most ďathleticĒ goats can jump them. From now on I will buy 48 inch panels and cut them down to 40 inches.

I bought all my panels from Triple C Hardware in Ozona. I think they were around $40 each.

Minimum of 7 panels and 14 t-posts per pen. I would prefer to have about 10 panels per pen but we have done everything on a budget. I pick spots where I can drive t-posts pretty deep before setting anything up any more. Some areas where we canít drive t-posts we have used barrels filled with rocks.

PS: if you come across cheap or free cattle panels, you can use them. Just wrap chicken wire or welded wire around it, and it will keep goats from stick their head through.

I'm headed out there this afternoon. I won't make it in time to hunt this evening, but will be in the stand tomorrow morning for sure. Hopefully this approaching cold front will have them up and moving. I'm down to killing culls, which won't be hard because they're everywhere. Maybe the change in weather will get the pigs up and moving as well. I need to take several of them down.

Thanks. That's the kind of information I was looking for. It's too much work and money to do it wrong. Dang goats.

Have you tried a hammer drill to make a pilot hole for t posts when they are in rock?

When you use a barrel full of rocks , where do you find rocks. Lol. I think when God made val verde county He started with one big rock then piled all the extra rocks in Texas on top of it.
