6.5 Creedmoor on Elk

Any opinions on using a 6.5 Creedmoor on elk. I got asked to go on a last minute cow elk hunt in New Mexico. I have been on this hunt before and there is a lot of hiking over rough terrain.

I have a Remington 5R Milspec in 300 Win Mag, but it is a heavy gun. Even with a backpack sling, it would get heavy real quick.

I recently bought a Savage Long Range in 6.5 Creedmoor. It is much lighter and would be easier to pack around. Any thoughts on using it on cow elk?

I'd go with Creedmore, personally.

Some will say it’s good
Some will say it’s on the lite side and take a .30 cal round
Some will say they heard their friend’s, 2nd cousin’s, girl friends other man used a 243 successfully

I would say you’re solid with a good bullet choice

After shooting several Critters with my 6.5 Grendel I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a cow elk with it. You should have no problem at all with the Creedmoor

In the spirit of the cousins baby daddy.....The owner of the ranch we hunt in colorado shoots them with a 270. Each one Ive killed has been with 7 mag. Dad has killed them with 25.06, 7x57, 7 mag and .300 H&H. Ive seen them killed from 40 yards to 500 yards and fall in one shot or take 3 like a boss. Heard lots of good stuff about that bullet and I wouldnt be scared

Thanks for the advice. I just realized the trip is the same time as a youth hunt my buddy puts on for the families of Game Wardens killed in the line of duty. I have helped out for several years now and do not ant to miss it.

I won't be going to New Mexico, but will file this information away for later use.
