    Showpig Season

How many TBH'ers raise showpigs or are involved with 4-H or FFA? As the showing season is getting started I figured I would see who all will be involved this year?

Personally I showed pigs and steers all over texas from 9-18 but I have been involved with raising pigs my entire life.

My wife is a district 4-H specialist...... So there is a lot of 4-H in my house 24-7 365........

FIL has been a 4-H livestock coach for Guadalupe county for a long time (It is over 20 years)

My wife's family also has a farrow-finish operation that farrows year round. And this time of year is busy with all of the people that come to buy show pigs.

So the farm will be busy this time of year. In addition a lot of the collegiate judging teams come to the house to practice. Blinn is supposed to be there this weekend with 36 "kids" to practice. So I will be washing and moving pigs all day Saturday.......

My kids are not old enough to show yet or to be 4-H members but they will as soon as they hit the magic year of 9 years old/ 3rd grade

My 11 year old daughter is raising her first pig for Brazoria county this year. Has been a lot of fun so far. Also did a jackpot show which was helpful before our county show.

We are also involved in tjla Texas Junior Livestock Association and jackpot all over texas and run for points she ic currently in the lead in our division. We currently have 4 pigs on feed for state fair of texas..Alot of work but very rewarding and good way to spend family time together aside from hunting..

Just one daughter left showing but we have hit it hard the last 8 years. Have one York in the barn right now for Dallas and have looked at over thirty litters of baby pigs so far for county/majors. Will probably only have five in the barn with one showing but have had as many as 12 in the past. Have done some damage at our county and placed quite a few at the majors. Have yet to get a banner at a major though. Well I kind of count the Kerrville District show as a major and we have some banners from there. Here's a picture from last years County Grand. We also had the Champion Dark OPB.

I showed steers and heifers since 8th grade. Tried pigs one year, just wasn't for me. My brother will be at all major shows this year and every small show he can with his red Brahmans.

I showed while growing up and between three kids we would usually raise 20+ pigs a year. We travelled all over for jackpots all year round. Our local show was the Kerr county and district show which we one a few times. Also went to Houston and San Antonio every year and always did really good. Won my Duroc class at Houston and had numerous 2nd and 3rd places in San Antonio.

In my opinion showing is a great experience for kids and families all together. My sister is in her senior year so she will be showing this year. I'm too old so I only show the boars and gilts at the NSR shows and the other major boar and gilt shows. Luckily I got to stay involved with raising pigs we currently have over 70 babies on the ground!

Well just finished up last year. Gonna miss it for sure. My daughter showed chickens , rabbits , then went to pigs , lambs and by some chance her Ag teacher talked her into calf scramble. This is where her last two years were doing heifers. Loved every minute of it. Her first heifer just had her calf three months ago. The second is due in Feb., but we're not done. She started collage Monday with her dreams and desire to become Ag teach. Her uncle Teaches in Lorena.
