This hunt was the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat after calling him in and shooting him and then not finding him. Then it was the thrill of victory again when we found him and the meat still looked good. But we're back to the agony of defeat again. Took the meat to the processor this afternoon, and when we opened the coolers it was rank. Meat had a hint of green color. After taking it out and letting it sit in the open air for a minute or two it got greener by the second. Had to toss it.

I'll take the cape to Jerry Huffaker in the morning. If I'm really lucky it won't be slipping and will be usable. My expectations for that now are low.

Guess I'll have to shoot more axis this year to make up for it. And then I guess I'll have to go back to the mountains again next year to kill another elk.

I already cut the skull cap. I should have kept the skull intact. If the cape is ruined, I could buy a replacement cape, use an artificial skull, or just do antlers on a plaque deal. I'll probably opt for the plaque. I like those old school looking antler displays anyway.

It's not all bad. Now I have a GREAT excuse to hunt elk again next September.

Congrats! Very nice photos and story. I really like those black antlers with the chrome on them. He's going to make a beautiful mount.

Great looking bull, congratulations on successfully taking one with bow and arrow. Makes me want to get out there and chase them around myself. Those pics and your recap make me want to go bad.

Is the lake you were fishing the one below Fred's place? That is great country. Went on a hunt with Fred a few years back.

No, all that country around Gulnare is private. We fished North Lake and Monument Lake to the west of where we were hunting.
