I Hate Acorns

Like the title says - I Hate Acorns.

They are as thick as the dirt on the ground here on my home place, and I haven't seen a deer at my feeders in 3 weeks.

Still haven't had a chance to hunt the river place (family farm), but I hope to remedy that tomorrow. There are no oak trees & acorns there.

If you can't beat em', join em'....

Found the bucks are protecting the acorns just like the feeders, all the while rounding up a doe or two or three or more.

I had no deer at feeder today and I got no acorns. They were chasin something else after this front. I’m not gonna say I hate that though

Me too. Only because I don't have any to hunt

Had a young buck come by and grab a few kernels and leave. These deer are fat and healthy. Just not interested in corn.

Imagine thousands of acres of oak brush 3 to 5 feet tall with acorns clustered on them like grapes on the vine. All about as big as your thumb and when they start dropping they literally cover the ground. Then there are the white oak trees. They haven't even really started dropping yet.

Fortunately the green stuff is fading. The shinnery oaks have dropped most of their mast but there is still plenty laying around waiting to be eaten.

You can hunt trails. However it's a guessing game and you are just as likely to see nothing. In the half mile from the pond to the back is a half mile. There are half a dozen major trails crossing the two track long the way and just as many smaller ones.

It's all good. December is coming.

The one thing I have seen I dont like is 2 year old six points. And not good rack six points. Today is the one year anniversary of our purchase. We really need to get some mineral out for these deer. I'm sure this sandy soil lacks a lot they need. In time this will be a great place to hunt. Right now it's a project.

Hunted my spot on the family farm this evening.

Not counting the deer I saw driving in, and driving out, I saw 40 individual deer, and over half of those were within shooting range, and in good positions at one time or another. Here's the kicker - the feeder isn't working, and appears to not have been working for quite a while.

Only one shooter buck showed up though, and even though he was within range (numerous times) he was so busy harassing the doe, that I could never get a shot at him. Small 8 point. I'm kinda glad he never gave me the opportunity, because I was definitely in shoot mode.

A very exciting evening.
