Default What motorcycle?

I'm gonna buy another bike after we close on our house in a couple weeks. If you only had about a $5k cash budget for a used bike, what would you get? I have an opportunity to by an extremely clean 2011 Victory 8 Ball from a friend with upgraded seat, exhaust and a tune for about $4500. He takes meticulous care of his stuff. I have also seen some great deals on some Honda VTX 1800's for about the same money. Most of the Harley models I like are over my budget...mostly little 883's and 1200 sportsters in my range. I want something with plenty of power, reliable and comfortable enough for the wife to hop on the back and take a long ride..

So what would you buy used for 5k?

I have a 2007 victory hammer no issues what so ever and I'm original owner I'd go with the victory.

I had a VTX 1300 and a buddy had a Victory Kingpin at the same time. Of the 2, and with both of our experiences, I'd go with the VTX.

I'd like to find a Harley but the ones I like seem to be a bit over what I'll have to spend. Everyone I've talked to that has had a Victory had great things to say about them. I'm limited in my options with my budget but really want another bike and don't want to finance one.

Used Yamaha Road Star or Stratoliner. They're bullet proof and tons of torque.

I hear that, but all in all, victory is a good bike. You wont be dissapointed and they put out some pretty good numbers performance wise

Yah i like the numbers I've seen...good amount of torque. I think I'm most likely gona buy my buddy's Vegas 8 Ball but came across a heck of a deal on a TBHers Harley so we'll see. It'll be 2-3 weeks before I buy so figured I'd get some feedback from some TBH motorcycle guys.

I guess you're looking at cruisers, but since you asked me () I'd look for a Triumph Street Triple. Absolutely loved my striple, every single minute of it. Had several cruisers in the past, including a VTX, and it was great but the handling and obviously power of the naked sport bike was just incredible and can't even really be compared. I'll never go back to cruisers.

I've had sport bikes and love em but I'm ready to go back to a cruiser. I want something comfortable enough for a 2000 mile round trip that my wife will ride with me. The triple is a pretty sweet bike though.

I recently picked up a used 2010 Triumph Thunderbird, 1600 with 5k original miles for right at $5K. I was able to get rid of my 03 Triumph America beforehand.

And yes, I too had a sport bike back in 1999, and the cruisers just dont compare to the agility and quickness. But I dont either anymore.

I'm a big fan of Triumph. Always wanted a Triumph Tiger for some strange reason. Ugly as sin but tons of power and looks like a tank for a road bike. Not in your price range so didn't bring it up.

I’d try any HD that’s not a sporty over Victory. Not there is anything wrong with Victory, but my concern would be lack of dealer and parts.

Do they still make Victory motorcycles? They are nice bikes, but so are Honda's and Yamaha's. I owned a 2006 Yamaha Road Star 1700 and had 97,000 miles on it when I sold it. It ran just as good at 97,000 miles as it did when I bought it new. Never needed anything but a battery in all that time. I have friends that own the Honda 1800 and the Victory 8 Ball. Both are good bikes. I would lean towards Honda and Yamaha over the Victory though. It's easier to get parts for them. My Road Star hurt a lot of my Harley buddies feelings when they couldn't keep up with me

I have never owned more then a dirt bike, but have friends that ride and on just what I hear from them complaining about

Check the maintenance cost on the VTX 1800. Had a friend that had one and it was always in the shop being worked on and cost him money all the time.
I looked at the 8-ball myself when I wanted a bike. I liked the look of them.

I own a Roadstar and have been very happy with it but to be honest if you can get a full size Harley for close to your budget I'd probably go that direction. All of the bikes mentioned here are good but that Harley will hold it's value longer.

I would buy a Suzuki Vstrom 1000 adventure bike, or something like a sport touring bike. But that is because I hate cruisers LOL. Suzuki Vstrom's, Yamaha FJR's, Honda ST1300's, etc., are very comfortable and will have much more performance (handling and power) than equal sized cruisers. I have owned a lot of bikes in the 36 years I have been riding and other than dirtbikes, dual sports and adventure bikes have become my favorite.

Get anything but a Harley

Why pay more just for a name? Especially, if the alternatives are less problematic.

Victory is no mas. Article says 10 years of service from Polaris

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonfo.../#69e137412175

A buddy went from a Vegas 8 Ball to an Indian. Loves it. If my ranch visits become less and less, I'll be selling my ranger and buying a bike.

Because the alternatives don't perform nearly as well as my Roadglide or dyna low rider s.

I've had quite a few from Harley Dyna, Heritage Soft tail, and Road King to 3 different Honda VTX bikes. I had the VTX 1800 and also the 1300. Honestly my favorite bike to ride was the VTX 1300. It was jetted and had cobra exhaust and was way more fun to ride than the VTX 1800. I'm with the save your money folks when it comes to Harley. Unless you just find one you like there are better options for way less money.

Yah 2017 is last year of production but that really doesn't concern me. There will be plenty of parts available for the length of time I would need them. Everyone I know that has had them said they are pretty problem free and very dependable. I only intend on keeping whatever I get for a couple years. I just want to buy a cheaper used cash bike to last me until my daughter graduates in 2019. I plan on getting a new one after that. I've had different types of bikes and personally I'm a cruiser kinda guy.
