Water leak - carpet

Without getting into the details of what happened, generally the story is the HVAC drain line in the utility room leaked into the house and soaked the carpet.

After removing the water, what can be put on the carpet and pad to prevent mold?

I work as a property adjuster for an insurance company. You want to get the carpet pulled up and get some fans and heat on it to truly stop mold from forming. Might also want to run a dehumidifier in the room for a while. You might be able to get it to dry without mold if it’s a small area, but if it’s soaked the whole room you most likely won’t. You can try a product called Microban, I think you can get it at Home Depot or Lowe’s, but it may stain the carpet. Only way to guarantee mold won’t form is to get it dry ASAP though.

I usually replace the pad because it is so hard to dry the pad once water gets under it.
Like ElCid said, keeping mold from growing is all about getting the area dry quickly

Yeah, pad is so cheap anyways, and it doesn’t have to be pretty, you can just cut and tape in the new stuff. Might as well. It will speed up drying considerably. Pad is basically a sponge and you’re trying to dry that. It doesn’t really work.

Before you put the carpet/pad back down, spray the slab/subfloor with a product called
ConSan Triple Action 20... It's a very good disinfectant and fungicide... It will kill any mold spores that may remain on the floor... can also spray especially the back side of the carpet and let it dry before putting it back down...

Throw the pad out, it is basically a giant sponge. As already mentioned it is very inexpensive to replace the pad. Shop vac out as much of the water from the carpet as possible, then dry with fans and dehumidifier or turn the AC down as cold as you can stand for a few days. Treat with a disinfectant on the slab/subfloor and on the carpet, microban is a pretty solid choice.

If you have time to do this before the moisture is absorbed into the carpet material, nothing will happen to its pile and base. Pad needs to be replaced. It will never not stink after it gets wet. Dry the carpet, new pad, restretch the carpet, clean carpet, good to go (as long as the carpet isn't rotted and/or delaminated from the backing).
