I feel like I've read a book that has no ending. I hope this turns out good for the hunter. Great deer.

Do a search for "humane dispatch" on TBH. Lots of threads have covered the topic. During one such thread someone asked a Grayson co. warden for his position and he took a firm stance against dispatching a deer with a gun in an archery only county.

The moral of the story is there is a defense to prosecution for humanely dispatching a deer outside of a season or legal shooting hours but that doesn't mean a warden won't cite you if this is done. Some are more forgiving than others and - from what I've seen - there is at least one warden up there that is not someone I would ever want to deal with.

Also, didn't mean to suggest this deer was shot with a gun. Only that if a follow up shot had to be taken and the location or time of day came in to question, the gw might have cited him for it because they are known to do that. We are all just guessing at this point, except for one or two that seem to be in the know.

Thats why its always good to make friends with the GW in your area. Get the wife or significant other to bake them goods, have them over in camp for a steak dinner, keep them in the loop when hunting at night or off season, etc.

I knew at least 2 other incidents where pretty much the same thing happened and one got a slap on the hands, and the other missed on a deer of a lifetime since he was told by the GW to let the GW shoot him while he was standing 10 yards away from the deer he wounded.

I know Travis well. Heís a close friend though we may go months without speaking. Heís a great person. The kind of person that has a water heater sent to your house on Christmas Eve when yours blows up and your down on your luck and out of cash. The kind of guy that send la you and your wife Bibles in the mail for your anniversary. The kind of guy that walks up to a drunk redneck thatís a foot taller, outweighs him but 100lbs, and is clearly drunk and walks him away from the crowd to talk about God.

I know a lot more about this than I will post but this deer was shot 100% legally on 2 separate occasions by Travis. Itís a HUGE deer and anytime HUGE deer come into play in Texas there is always an investigation. It really bothers me the way TPWD handles these mega deer cases. Thatís the first time Iíve heard 271Ē but it was roughed at 278Ē the day it was recovered. I hope and pray this technicality gets squared away soon and the deer goes back in Travisís possession WHERE IT BELONGS.

100% agree with my red headed brother, Travis is one of a kind great. And I am honored to call him my brother in Christ.

I don't know the hunter but from what I've read I don't think there is any question about his faith or character. Big deer have an effect on all of us who are obsessed with them and can cause a lapse in judgement if even for the briefest of moments to cause us to do something that we wouldn't do 99% of the time. None of us are perfect and are subject to lack of our best judgement when in a moment of (Fill in the blank). That doesn't make anyone any less of the person they were, are, or will be. It's how you bounce back afterwards that is the true showing of the person's integrity. We all make mistakes. I wish the best for him as a fellow hunter and christian.

Honestly he needs prayers and support right now.

He made a choice that most of us would have done same in this situation.

He was honest about. Most of us would not have been as honest.

I do not know him, but he is our brother in Christ and in a bad spot.

Many consequence and some of them would would make grown man cry. Especially if you love to hunt...again.

So sifting through all of the hoopla, do I understand correctly that he may have dispatched the deer in an archery-only county with a firearm? Is that where the issue lies?

or from a helicopter, at night, on the game warden's lawn, with a bump stock.

At this point, anything is possible.

Ok, so he shoots the deer and wounds it. Finds it at a later date after legal hours. Shoots another arrow into the deer to kill it. Contacts the GW and lets them know what happened.

Hope the GW does the right thing. At worst, issue a warning or small fine but let Travis keep the deer. But realize this, many GW would love to make a case on this because it gets them notoriety amongst their peers and supervisors. Hope the GW doesn't try to claim the glory.
