Transfer to computer help

I am trying to get my Sony Dv camcorder to download to the laptop and not having any success. First the I link wouldn't match up the the ports so I had to get an adapter. Now that its hooked up the laptop will not recognize the camera as new hardware.
I have tried going through add hardware and I tried Movie Maker.

Any ideas?

how old is the laptop? did you get a standard firewire?

I was using a laptop that wouldn't recognize my Panasonic camcorder. I was told to go to the windows website and download all of the updates available. I did and it worked like a charm. Might try that????
