    The 30 second Buck

Myself and three other TBHers have a lease in Kansas. For three of us this is the first year to hunt it. I wan't too sure on the first few hunts about hunting creek drainages running thru wide open farm land. It is ceartianly different than hunting here in Texas. We braved some cold north winds and low temperatures over two trips.
On our second trip, I had hunted for two days and seen quite a few deer, but mostly small bucks and does.
On the afternoon of day three's afternoon hunt I had a group of does come in about thirty minutes before dark. I decided to shoot one. I was in a 12 foot ladder blind facing a CRP field with a deep creek behind me and more field on the other side of the creek. I stood up slowly as all of the does had their heads down and clipped on my release. As soon as the release was on, I heard grunting right under me. This buck came out of the creek and went directly under me. As soon as I looked down, I knew I was going to shoot him.
He ran up to the does and started to push them, He was running strait away from me. I grunted. He put on the brakes and gave me a hard quartering away shot. I had literally 2 seconds to draw and make the shot. The arrow hit right where I intended and I watched him fall 60 yards away. I'm still shocked at how well the shot went off with not much time to prepare.

from the time I saw him until I saw him drop was around 30 seconds.

This might be the most exciting hunt in my 40 year hunting life.

We measured him out at 163 1/4. No one in our group has ever measured a non typical like this one, so we could be off on the green score.

Great buck!! It's probably a good thing that you didn't have to look at him very long. If it would've been me, the longer I had to think about it, the less chance I probably would have had to seal the deal.
