Michaela was lucky enough to be drawn for this hunt. She has been excited about it since we found out!
She was one of five to be drawn for this week, but only three hunters showed up. Unfortunately they don't offer standby for the archery hunts.
Only permitted hunters are allowed in the hunt compartments during hunting times, so she is having to fly solo! I'm here for moral support and as camp chef! We are camping in one of the screened shelters in the park.
They did allow me to ride around when they were showing the hunters their respective compartments, and I helped Mo set up a Xenek ground blind about 30 yards downwind of the feeder in the compartment. I think it's a good location, under an oak Mott at the edge of an open pasture, with a heavily travelled trail and a draw converging on the area.
We stacked four alfalfa bales (based on a suggestion from a friend that traps exotics) 25 yards away near one of the trails, about 20 yards from the feeder.
Mo shot a hog within 30 minutes of setting up this evening. She knew it was an errant shot (hit it in the butt), but she saw blood spurting so we thought there might be a chance of recovery. I helped trail after dark and we followed a heavy trail through thick cedars and brush before realizing the hog wasn't going to be recovered.
We cooked some awesome burgers for dinner and are heading to bed with dreams of big Axis racks!
She'll be back at it tomorrow morning and we'll continue to update.
