Unless I go longer than 400mm my bag is complete at the moment.

OK, I am confused. What are the advantages of this over the Nikon or Canon version which both are about half the price?

          It's a much better lens!

That's what's so unusual. Sigma rolling out better glass than the big two. A light hog 50mm with razor sharp focus not seen before is irresistible to me.

Leggy what is your go to lens? I am looking for another lens and was thinking wide angle this go around

For wide shots I use the tokina 2.8 11-16mm

It's relatively affordable and is a 2.8 through the range. It comes in both Canon and Nikon versions so be sure to order the one that fits your camera.

It gets a little dark around the corners at 11mm so I frequently shoot it at 12mm.

My midrange glass is a 2.8 Sigma.

Not exactly competitive at that price point. Canon 1.4 is about $350 and is a great lens, the 1.2 however is more expensive and from online comparisons, the Sigma edges out the Canon 1.2 in sharpness de but the difference is negligible.

I doubt anyone could even tell the difference if they weren't viewing both photos side by side. I bet the 1.8 is pretty darn close as well.

What some call negligible I call need!

Yes it's overkill but overkill appeals to me.

I wouldn't call it overkill, have you seen the Leica 50mm? $10,000

However, personally for me, I'd love to get my hands on the old Canon 50mm f1.0

I didn't get the Sigma Art. I bought the regular ol' Sigma 50mm f1.4. So far, I'm pleased.

Jpeg straight from the 5D III in pretty low light

A little more Sigma 50mm f1.4 love. Dinner as I prepared it Friday night.
