Any other TBHers get drawn on the chap?

I'll be arriving Monday, staying at the campground. Excited to be going back!

BUMP! There must be some fellow TBH'ers attending, hopefully! I'm anxious about which compartment we will end up with, last time I hunted, I had first choice and took Ano Nuevo, and that was a mistake! Way way too thick!

I had planned to go on standby, but they are only gonna draw one card for each of the either sex hunts this year. Will wait till better odds.

good luck on the hunt.

I'll be there tomorrow. I have never hunted there before. Tried to draw standby several times. Talked to the manager- he said no big deer this year- affected by the drought of 2011-2012. Anyone have suggestions on an area?

Man, I don't know how I was so lucky this year, especially with being able to attend them all. I'll never be able to hunt this many ever again until I retire if I'm able. My 73yr old father has made them all with me. Good memories with the man that taught me.

I applied for alot last year and this year. Ive yet to be drawn on a rifle hunt. The last one I went on was at the Chap in 2014

Heading over there shortly today from Laguna. Saw a dozen deer (few in range) and a boat load of Javelina, and a handful coyotee (2 15 yard broadside!)--> basically everything I could not shoot.

Only saw one Nilgi from the road, tried to stalk up on it after going to park, but that was no bueno. Cool place though, learned a lot. Think in the future I would just enter gun/archery deer + nilgi, instead of just exotic. Had shooting chances at one nice buck, and multiple does.

Will be the first time at Chap, staying in the camping grounds.

The manager helped destroy the age class by continuing to harvest large numbers of spikes during the drought years.

I’m here in the RV campground. This is my first time to hunt Chaparral WMA after many years of putting in for the draw. Anyone else ruffing it in an RV for this hunt?

Went on a rifle hunt two years ago at the chap. After hunting east Texas for several years my mind was blown seeing so many solid bucks. I shot a good 10-point the first hunt (130, 19-inch spread), then had to pass on a gorgeous 10 later in the week that was probably sniffing 150. Good luck this week!

I'm here settling in. ISO a 240V to 30amp adapter for generator to rv. Heading to Cotulla now to waste my time not finding one at this hour.

Not sure if it's the same guy who was there when we went, but while spikes were allowed, they were highly discouraged.

It was nice meeting you this evening. Didnít know I was talking to a fellow TBHer about your generator adapter issues. Donít waste too much of your time, generators in the campground should be turned off 2 hours after dark.

probably quite a few. I wish I didn't live seven hours away. I'd go standby for every hunt if I lived within an hour or two. A bunch of locals did standby when we were there for our gun hunt a couple of years ago.

decent odds, at least for the standbys. last time I went there were 42 cards or something, with 1 drawn.

we got east blocker, see some good trails in here.
Got a hog, but he was real hurt someone had shot off his jaw.
We told the park rangers about him since we did not really want to touch him since he looked infected.

Uncle shot him first then I laid him low with the 2nd shot, but I'm pretty sure that hog was looking to be put down.

Saw 1 guy check in a doe today when we were heading back to camp.

I was there about this time a few years ago. Saw a few from the stand, but spent most of my time and effort rattling. Best morning I rattled in 6 nice bucks, ended up shooting a real nice 12. Be tough with a bow, but doable. I shot mine at 20 yards and was wishing I had a bow!

I remember that buck. very cool deer. it was crazy how many bucks were moving while we were there for that hunt. it seems like the hunts they've had since haven't been nearly as good.

Yes sir, we’ll do it again in a few years or twenty! Another pointer, if you kill your deer early be kind and let someone else have your pasture if they aren’t seeing anything. Gave up mine with a couple days left to a group that wasn’t seeing anything. As I was loading my stuff up to head home one of the guys gave me an invite to hunt axis. I’ve been going to his place ever since and we’ve become great friends. Killed some dang nice axis too. Karma can be awesome if you’re on the right end of it

Ive seen quite a few deer. 4 bucks. Had a 1.5 yr old 6 at 25 yards, multiple does and yearlings. I rattled in a good mature buck, looked like a 9, wide. I saw him cruising about 90 yards away, couldnt get him to hear a grunt, rattled quickly and got my bow in hand. He appeared somehow or another, from the opposite direction I saw him originally traveling, 22yards away almost down wind. He stiff walked in with ears laid flat back, hair bristled up, posturing up hard! He winded me and turned around quickly and headed out the way he came. I let one loose at 30yards and slung it right over him.

Had to try.

Had a 2.5 yr old 8pt standing in the same spot 4 min later....ate corn for a few minutes. I snapped a few photos.

Still at it.

Probably closer to 20, but one can dream. Awesome deal on the axis hunts. We had 3 other guys in my group once I killed mine, so I spent the rest of the week scouting for them. None of them have access to axis, but I did put my dad on a nice buck, so I guess that's almost as good
