LOL!! It hurts me too bud. I'm on a pretty good lease for my area. It's just weird...I can tag out no problem from a box blind with a rifle. But, I may hunt all year and never have a chance with a bow. I've been talking about it for years, but I'm gonna have to suck it up and drop the money next year for a lease where I'll see more deer. I'm roughly 20 sits in and no opportunities yet. It's a beating. The deer here are just pressured, and smart. I may try to hang a lock on in one more spot. If nothing happens there I don't know what else to do.

A little bit of the frustration has worn off and I'm getting a few more daytime pics. I'm gonna try it again this evening. Setting up my Ghost Blind near a feeder that has had some pretty good activity. The wind will be perfect and it's a nice afternoon so we'll see what happens.

Felt good out this evening. Saw a couple does that were too far to shoot, then had one come in close on my downwind side and bust me. They're still eating corn a little bit, but not like they were. Acorns are gonna keep things slow for a while I'm afraid.

I don't even know what to say...after all these sits with no chances I had a big doe come into my hand corn at 12 yards, calm, perfectly broadside right at dark this evening. I drew and she had no idea I was in the world. Let it go, and could tell I got a little far forward into the shoulder, but she kicked her back legs up and took off. I didn't get a pass through but still felt good about it. I got out and couldn't see any blood, so I walked back to camp, waited a few minutes, then went back with my 4 wheeler and my son and we started looking. Not a drop of blood, no arrow, nothing...we grid searched probably a 400 yard area of the thickest nastiest stuff you could imagine and never found anything. I thought for sure I'd see my lumenock and find the arrow at least but nothing. This is only the second deer I've lost in my entire life, and the other was when I was a kid. To say I'm sick about it would be an understatement. I'm guessing I hit the bone in her shoulder. I would go look tomorrow, and I might go check for buzzards but the meat would be spoiled anyway. I may not be hunting for a while now!!

Sorry to read of the experience CRM. Most of us know that bitter taste all to well. Keep shooting and working. Not questioning your thought or visual, but if it was close to dark, any chance you pulled further into the body? I know that does not help find her. Just a thought.

It's not a good feeling. I know that your skills are improving. One shot does not make or break the archer. You've figured out how to set up to get an east Texas deer in to 12 yards and get a shot off undetected. That's a big accomplishment in itself. Don't give up friend. Knuckle down, shoot more and get back out there.

No, the Lumenock pretty well showed me where I hit. I knew it was in the shoulder, but must have hit either the joint or shoulder blade. I really thought I'd be ok, I've hit a deer in the shoulder before and found it. Just didn't work out this time.

Chin up Ryan, I know everybody on here has faith in ya brother! I wouldn’t expect ya to be “ok” with it, but I do know you’ll learn from it, and keep on keeping on! I don’t think there’s a one of us that hasn’t had something similar happen at one time or another. Good Huntin, and God Bless, Rusty

Keep at it you got a deer within 12yards and that in itself if an accomplishment. A hunter can loose a deer with a rifle shot so keep that in mind. I can not say too much cause the wife wants to move out when I can not find a deer I am hard to live with. All that said dont give up and get back at it soon.

Thanks y'all. I went back this morning and looked for buzzards and couldn't find any. There's a tank nearby I'm gonna check this afternoon. I've played the shot back a thousand times, and I definitely remember hearing a "crack" on impact. Hopefully I didn't penetrate the shoulder blade and she will get that arrow out and heal up. Not sure how much bow hunting I'll be doing between now and then, but I'm headed back to First Point in a couple weeks so hopefully I can get one there.

Yes indeed!! I've been lucky. I knew I'd lose one bow hunting eventually, just wasn't really prepared for it I guess. It's hard to describe. Kinda of a super low point after a huge rush. I checked the tank this afternoon and nothing there, and still no buzzards, so I'm hoping she made it.

I had the same thing happen to me 2 seasons ago, except it was a nice buck. I was sick and I know you are too. Same loud crack, only 4" of the arrow was broken off in him. He showed back up a week later.
Chin up dude! You will make the next one count.

I'm about to head out, but I'm not taking y'all with me today. My tradition since my dad passed has kinda become hunting with his rifle on opening morning of rifle season. Then I have to work tonight. But tomorrow evening I plan to be back in the bow blind where I shot the doe last week. I haven't seen any buzzards so I'm hoping she made it and gives me another chance.

The weather is looking pretty good for the whole trip so far. I got another Big Mike's pop up on clearance for $100 and it should be here today. Since I'm going solo I don't think I'm gonna bother pulling a trailer. I think I'm just gonna put my 4 wheeler in the back of the truck, put my clothes and ice chest and pop in the back cab, and just set up one pop up and make one brush blind, one for a north wind and one for a south because I'm sure it'll switch at some point. The weather will probably actually be good enough to just take my truck but they sure do get scratched up on those ranch roads, so I'm gonna take the 4 wheeler since this trip is a little longer than the last one.

So the new blind came and I set it up in the back yard. I believe in the practice how you hunt mentality 100%. So for the next few days, all my practice will be out of this blind at 15 yards. When I get there I’ll set up with a 15 yards max shot.

Ok, so I'm a little nervous...I'll be pulling out for First Point in the morning. I'm excited and shooting pretty well..but for whatever reason I'm having a hard time getting past wounding that doe. I keep second guessing myself and my setup even though I know it's fine. Anyway, I'll try to keep y'all entertained. I talked to Bo and the ranch will actually be almost full. We'll have a group of 4. I'm sure I'll be the only trad hunter there, which is always interesting too!!

Ok so we’re in pasture 6. In the blind and the corn truck just came through!! So far we have 2 pop ups and a tripod up, just a lot of work when you have a group to get it all set up and brushed in. I’ve never hunted 6 before and I’m not too terribly far from camp. But there’s a ton of sign so we’ll see what happens.

Saw 2 does and a spike this evening. The does we’re in range but never gave me a really good shot so I didn’t wanna rush it especially since it was the first hunt. We’ll be back at it in the morning. Lots of folks in camp but nothing killed this evening. We’ll get some new setups ready tomorrow too.

I love hunting down here...the deer this afternoon skirted my setup, like they’ll do when they’re nervous here. But I had set up so close that even when they skirted me they still crossed at about 15 yards. Just too much brush between us. I had my blind brushed in great but they still picked up on something. It’s crazy how observant they are.

Nope. My 22yo went to court Wednesday and they showed him leniency. Hopefully he learns from it and moves past it. They have to deal with the consequences of their actions but as a parent it sure is tough to watch them take lumps. In my prayers bud.

Thanks. It's tough for sure. We'll start meeting with attorneys Monday. I have zero experience on a personal level with this type of thing, although i deal with it on a daily basis at work. Kind of put it in a completely different perspective for me I guess.

Things are getting back on track around here. I filled my buck tag last week on a spur of the moment hunt, but not with a bow. With that said, Thursday morning I'll be in a new stand I hung a couple weeks ago as long as the north wind they're predicting holds true and nothing unforseen happens. Then Friday I'll be getting a pass around bow from tradgang. It's a Black River hybrid and I'll have it for a month, so maybe I'll get to hunt a little in December in the NF in Trinity County with it. I can still kill a buck there so it's not over. I have a lot of other stuff going on but I'm not giving up on hunting at least a little bit more!!
