I struck out hard. Can't always be successful I guess. I did not see a deer in 6 hunts, other 2 had plenty of deer and shots, couple of long missed shots, cousin killed his first hog with a bow.
I'll admit I've already had my fill of hunting and did not give it my all, but thats okay, heading to the Chap Monday! Then I'm going full blitz!

Saw a total of 7 nilgai, 2 being bulls yesterday. No shot opportunity as they were either off in the distance or I was packing in. Weather is warm

Has anyone checked the board yet? I haven’t been around to see what has been killed. I saw a couple whitetail bucks in bow range and a hog just out of bow range yesterday. I haven’t seen any nilgai yet though.

Calfroper, I’m sitting in section 1 and haven’t seen anything all day either. Changed locations so I will see if that helps.

Rough day. I was deep in brush and had a 6' rattler come cruising to me yesterday. Had to go to the truck for some fresh underwear after that. That sucker was big around as a 2 liter bottle.

Calfroper 06, how did the afternoon hunt finish up for you? I ended up seeing 1 whitetail and a pack of hogs both at 145 to 160 yards away, nothing within bow range.

Haha thats nice. I didnt see anything at all. I believe the neigboring ranch was working on the fence so that probably why nothing moved over into the pasture I was sitting on. My FIL got on a cow but she never gave him a shot and he saw 4 other yearlings. He traveled alot today though.

The FIL also talked with a guy that saw a bull and shot a cow. Said he hit her low and back and gave up the search after he tracked her a ways and she went into the super brush.

I saw some today. Not as many as Friday or Saturday. And they were all running for their lives when I did see them. The board had one cow taken on it. In 5. Saw a coyote. Rode over a rattlesnake with my bike.

Nothing added to the board when we went by around 5. We biked in all the way to the back of 8 I guess. At the last gate just go straight, jumped 3 yearling and a big cow. We have been pushing the brush and finding them laying down. Seems to be the only way we could find them. We are headed home in the morning as we have work wednesday. Good luck fellow TBH's.

For rifle, find the wide open units and be patient. Stay still and youíll get a shot. I donít know how they will be acting after being gun hunted, but I saw plenty out in the wide open staying far away from all the places hunters were set up. But I Also would find them in the thick stuff. Hopefully the gun hunters wonít be tripping over each other like the gun hunters were. I know I walked in front of people not realizing and felt terrible about it. and when I was settled in spots I would pick out hunters moving all over the place. Good luck. Good boots. Good bike. Sweat rag.

My group has seen Nilgai every day with one shot at and missed. Itís been way more challenging than I thought it would be but Iím still optimistic we can get lucky in the morning. I definitely would want to come back though. The challenge is what makes it rewarding in the end.

Thanks for the advice buddy I'm getting pretty pumped about this hunt and spending time with my dad and brother it has been a long time since the three of us have hunted together. I guess when I got married and moved out of state that kind of happens. But any other advise would be great I'm never too old to learn or heard what others have to say on things. Hopefully I get some good news on my Heel and Achilles tomorrow I had surgery on them in Oct. fingers cross!!

What an awesome experience. Was on Nilgai every day, got a slightly quartering away shot of on a blue bull day one but didn't get the penetration I needed.

Saw almost every animal in Texas (Nilgai, Whitetail, Javelina, Hogs, Bobcat, Coyote, Rattlesnake, Texas Tortoise...) will put in for this hunt every year.

Didn't get a Nilgai but got on the board with these two Hogs [Video]

Any feed back on how the pattern is working for you down there? LANWAR is the only place I've really deer hunted since '93 but haven't been is the last four years cause I moved away. I have hopes of returning one day and it would be great to have more camo options for for the type of brush down there.

Great video of both shots. Nice of that second pig to stick around. What unit were you in? Iím curious of all of your opinions on best method of hunting Nilgai. Sit and wait, spot and stalk, Still hunting? I tried to put a stalk on them but got busted before I got within 200 yds. I sat most of the time and watched them walk well beyond my effective range for three days.

I never had a problem with concealment down there. I believe it does a fine job of breaking up the human silhouette I had a deer walk out on me at 7 yards and never spooked. Where I got picked off was scent and movement.

That was in 3. It's so wide open I just don't think spot and stalk is practical. My thought is to get in early, get setup, and wait for them to come within range. They're smart and stay where they can see BUT they do come to water (I saw it twice), they do have escape routes they take when spooked (I saw that alot), they feed in one direction and back. If you can pick up on their tendenices then you'll have a shot.

To the Hunters that are starting the rifle hunt today good luck and have fun with the snow on the ground it will be a great day to hunt. Hunting in the snow makes everything more visible can't wait for everyone's updates on todays hunt.
