7.62 MM Match XM 118 Ammo Question

OK green screen. I have 20 boxes of this stuff un-opened and not sure if it is worth anything or what its history is. Do any of you know the story on this ammo and if it has any value?

    Thanks,
    Monty

    Is it 7.62 x 54 or 7.62 x 39? I don't see where it says it anywhere pictured.

Ok. This is what I have found so far. Should be 06 ammo.

X " in XM118 denotes that it is prototype/non-standard experimental ammo. This batch of ammo is collectible $ 18-20 per box.. 1963 was the first year production, if you open a box the headstamp should be LC 64. The Lot # is unusual, LC 12000 Lot series is normally used for M72 06 Match ammo but seems to be shared with M118 thru atleast the late 60's. Lot 12003 is T291 prototype pre XM72 match ammo.

Once it was accepted the "X" was dropped and there is no difference function wise between XM118 and M118.

1972 is a good year for White Box M118 Match, this ammo goes for $ 12-14 a box

I believe it is 54mm but I will need to go measure.

My guess would be 7.62x63 (.30-06). I'd bet good money it's not 7.62x39 (AK round). And probably not 7.62x51(.308). I'd also doubt if it's 7.62x54 (Mosin Nagant)

With a bullet weight of 173gr, my bet would be 7.62x63.

You should be able to get $1/round for it. Humper would probably buy it if you decide to sell.....

I bet it is 7.62x51, this was during the time of the M-14 and the velocity seems a bit low for an 06

Good point. I think the Garand stopped being used around the mid 60s, and the M14 had been in use for about 10 years by then. I had my dates a little off.

It could be either but the M14 had been replacing the Garand by '65 so it very well could be 7.62x51.

It's 7.62x51. It's good ammo and is the foundation for the M118LR that is used today with a 175gr SMK.
