Unless i have missed it I have not read much posted from Coryell County hunters so here is my story.
The morning of November 9th a stiff north wind forced me to go sit in a box blind overlooking an oat patch. Lots of bucks chasing does all morning but the buck I was after was a no show. I will say that an 18" wide 8 point sure did tempt me but it was obvious he needed another year or two. Things slowed around 11:00AM and i decided to call it a morning.
I decided to drive around to the far side of the ranch and take a dead battery out of my skid steer. I get out and unlock the gate and low and behold staring strait at me less than 100 yards away is my target buck i call Traveler. He is standing in a cedar thicket with a doe. I was able to crawl to the truck and retrieve my rifle but they trotted off before i could get a shot.
I knew Traveler would keep her nearby and on lock down so i leave and quickly made plans for the afternoon hunt. I go get a quick lunch and grab a stool and my shooting sticks. I didn't know exactly where i would set up but would figure it out when i got there.
I quietly pull up to the gate around 1:30 and begin to get my gear together. Through a small opening in the cedars I see a doe feeding on winter grass about 300 yards away. Then i see a second deer and its Traveler. Not wanting a 300 yard shot I needed to cut the distance.
There are a lot of cedars between me and them so the stalk is on. I slowly walk in the shade of the cedars. I cant see them and I sure hope they cant see me. I cut the distance to 200 yards and can see both deer grazing but have no shot. I get 50 yards closer and have a clear shot. About the time I got settled Traveler was broad side with his head down grazing. I touch one off and he fell in his tracks.
