I'm only familiar with Texas persimmon (I think), but have heard of the orange persimmons. Is that called a Japanese or eastern persimmon?

The fruit itself looks like a Chinese "orange" that I've seen growing wild on the place I hunt, but those grow on a thorny "tree".

The persimmons we've always had in our backyard look like this

After looking again, is the plant itself thorny? Have you cut one open and/or smelled it? Your picture almost looks like it may be growing from something similar to the first picture I posted. If so, it probably will smell like citrus. Idk the actual ID of the plant, but looked it up the first time I found them and think it was known as a "bitter orange" that was originally from China.

The plant is thorny and more bush like than a tree.

I did see other fruit on a tree that look like the persimmons in the picture, the were still green but the same shape.

Trifoliate Orange. Also called hardy orange. It's invasive.
