My group of (4) will be going. Utilizing free hotel rooms courtesy of Holiday Inn reward points from one of the guys going, so we won't be cooking very much. Perhaps they may all agree to join, can't say for sure. I've never had Oryx.

Looking forward to the hunt! I've been packing and organizing gear, clothes, stand set ups, video cameras and game cameras this morning! Picked up a 2nd hand climber for $65 and works great, bringing (1) hang on and a couple of ladder stands.

What stand arrangements are y'all bringing?

I'm bringing a climber, and possibly a ground blind just to stow away if I see the perfect spot.

I was told you can pre scout pretty easily with a mountain bike so I might bring one of them as well.

I called to visit with the manager of the GEWMA. I asked him about the usefulness if a bike, he replied sandy soil would make it difficult to use.

I am planning on going there tomorrow to get a feel for the area and scout several units to help in my selection of 3 preferred units. I plan on splitting a few of us up and covering as much ground as possible in search of sign and hopefully see some deer. The weather looks like its going to br GREAT!

Has anyone had any experience in a specific unit to share?

I hear it is a difficult hunt and that success rates are low. What do you believe contributes to low deer density?

Not really sure, could be predation, bordering private land pressure, hogs. Remember they include hogs in the success rate and last year they accounted for most of it, last year was pretty rough out there, not many deer brought in period, maybe this year will be better.

A buddy and I scouted GE yesterday. We walked through a couple of compartments, then drove the rest of the WMA almost through all units. We saw tons of hogs and walked up on several groups. Not a lot of deer sign. We bumped one unknown deer. It looks like it can be a difficult hunt due to the impenetrable vegetation.

I was extremely impressed with the WMA staff and how much work the are doing and have already accomplished just to keep the place in a condition making it easier for hunters to access areas and hunt.

Default TPWD Gus Engeling Archery Draw Hunt 10.31.17- thru -11.4.17

So myself and a few friends won the archery hunt for Gus Engeling next week. I have a few questions if you guys have any experience with the area. Any help would be much appreciated!

I will also try my best next week to upload as many photos as we can. Are there any feller’ TBH guys that will be there next week?

1. Does the group that was chosen for the drawn hunt, hunt one single unit? Or is it every man for himself?

2.Orientation is Tuesday at 12pm.
Is there any scouting before orientation?
Are we allowed to scout after orientation or do we go strait to set up a stand?

Feel free to share any information that could be helpful to the success of our hunts. Thank you in advance!

I’ve been on drawn Bowhunts at Gus. My hunt was by compartment. My group was all assigned to one compartment of a few hundred acres. You won’t be assigned a compartment until orientation. Pre scouting could be done with a Annual Public Hunting permit when Gus is open before your hunt but you won’t be guaranteed any particular compartment. You can request a particular compartment at orientation but no guarantee you’ll get it.

I hunt just east of Gus WMA on private land. Try and spook out as many deer my direction
I've seen some beasts in there over the years growing up right beside it. My dad has fished catfish creek over the years. There's tons of hogs & can be hard to hunt. Lots of bottom land with sloughs around the creek. I've heard they are pretty good on advice where to hunt within the compartment. You should see activity. Best of luck!

From my buddy's hunt this weekend:

Well, came home empty handed. Believe it or not my nephews gun misfired not 100 yards from where my brothers did a couple years ago, on a doe, broadside at 30 yards (I'm thinking there may be an old Indian burial ground there, lol). Hunted pasture 22, saw 3 does, 3 shooter bucks, 1 young buck, 8 hogs

Thats pretty good, I've hunted there multiple times and don't think I've seen that many deer combined but hogs bet I've seen over a 100 there.

I hunt less than a mile from the entrance. Get in early, stay all day, and hunt til dark. The bucks are cruising hard and you’ll probably see rutting activity by the end of the hunt. Good luck! There’s some bigguns out there

I hunt about 5 miles from the entrance myself, and the bucks have been pushing does hard the last two weeks. Does are gobbling up the acorns. Find a good oak tree and sit all day. If you do that and the ladies show up, you should have quite a few buck sightings!

Good luck!
