On Whitetails, with a compound, penetration is more about a well tuned bow than arrow weight. A wobbly arrow kills penetration way more than arrow weight. Like has already been posted, a deer is not much over 12” thick.
It really is a factor from traditional bows as we start out with a much slower arrow no matter the weight. For 30 years I hunted with a 74# recurve and a 820 grain arrow.
That works out to around 11 grains per pound of draw weight.
When you start hunting silly big critters the balance between arrow weight and speed becomes a important factor but on deer, it is just not a deal
