Anyone have any experience with the smaller outboard motors with the jet lower units instead of external propeller? Been looking around at possible boat options for shallow water with stumps and weeds. Came across these and thought they were interesting. Just looking for something possibly with a 16-18’ aluminum flat bottom.

I have a 16ft Jet Jon. 1100cc jet ski motor. Pretty neat little boat. Fast. However, I am waiting on my 1652 outboard jet to come. The jet jon takes up ALOT of the boat room. Jet pumps do not do well in thick matted grass or floating debri. However, you can make a **** puddle and it will run it.

We run them on the Sabine in east texas. Have to drive usually to north Arkansas or Missouri to find one. If you have any questions feel free to message me, and check out Texas Outboard Jets if you are on facebook. I have a 60/40 Mercury, wouldn't suggest getting anybody in Texas to mount your motor. Only 2 motors I have seen in Texas have been mounted wrong.

Thanks guys, yea the jet Jon boats are really cool, I’ve seen some of the videos posted on here and thought one would be fun to have for piddling around. I can see where the motor would tend to take up more room. Really looking for this to be something that I can take up on the northern ends of a couple lakes where it’s rough on a big bass boat. My neighbor and I take his 19.5 skeeter in some places where it’s either too shallow or too stumpy and waste more time just trolling easy so we don’t tear anything up. I’ve been thinking of getting something aluminum and more shallow running that could take the rough areas a little bit better. Came across the jet outboards and thought this might be something neat to have. Looks like they are getting pretty popular with the river rednecks around here

If you are running a bunch of vegetation, say like caddo with salvania/lillys/moss you do not want a jet. For the rivers they are perfect boats, but we have hunted out of ours on Lake Fork no problem. Alot of the vegetation it will eat it up no problem, but if it is thick better be ready to get out and walk or use a push pole. Yea just like Jlinville said, mine is a 60hp at the head but a 40 hp at the pump. But still not near as fast as a 40 prop, most we get out of any of our set up with the 60/40 is about 34-35 empty.
