TP&W says the current state record rod-n-real is 279lbs for gator gar. I once read a few years ago it was 304 by trot-line just south of lake Livingston.

i saw a couple of guys in a 12 ft john boat fight and land a gar that almost stretched the length of the boat. it was towing them up and down the trinity below livingston back in the 70's. it looked to be bigger than the boat when it jumped/surfaced.

For years the record was 302 in the TPWD book caught on the Nueces above same lake.

I've had huge ones up there tear up the heaviest trotlines I could make...Guess a 300# fish can do that LOL

Reminds me of a biggun that got very close while wade fishing at Richland Chambers. Didn't know they eat Blue Haron's till that day.

We have had several gar that size aged. They ranged from 17 to 37 years old. It is hard to tell by size. Its kinda like aging a 6ft man. He may be 16 or 75. They grow incredibly fast till about 6ft. Females may reach 6ft in 5 years but really slow down as they get older.

I weighed the picture on my certified scale and it came in at 7 lbs 4 oz. Using the standard fish weight calculating formula [weight of pict X 34.49 = certified weight] I came up with 249.99999 lbs so 250 lbs is close enough.

LOL! We both know how posting a fish weight goes.... especially "estimated" weight.
