You can get to Bannister in about 45 minutes from Nac. I used to hunt it quite a bit along with Alazan Bayou.

Seeing you are active duty your state license should be paid for. The permit is annual and it is only $48. There are other areas (non WMAs) where no permit is required. It is free to you.

Newton cty has all Bow only public land. Pretty good hunting. Moore Plantation is another good area. The Bannister Unit on HWY 83 East of Broaddus. I have hunted these area before and of these 3 I would hunt the Bow only in Newton. Moore gets a whole bunch of squirrel hunters during archery season. Bannister seems to be pretty isolated. Bannister is just up the road from Powell park and San Augustine....A.M hunt,P.M. fish.
