1953 Craftsman Lathe

A 1953 Craftsman Wood lathe is what got me started in turning. It was my grandfathers lathe. I till use it to this day as well as the table saw. The lathe is still using the original electric motor. I even still have the original owners manual for both pieces. You can still buy parts for these machines from Sears.

That's pretty good for just jumping in. I've been wanting to start bowls and stuff, but have not bought the chucks to do it yet. All I've done are pens and such. To me acrylic is the devil, and keeping the tools sharp becomes a chore to me. Sharpening has never been my strong suit

On a metal lathe you want your shirttail out. Gives them hot chips an escape.

A wood lathe is one of the few machines I don't have but am seriously thinking about getting one just to tinker with. I found a bunch of old cedar post that would make beautiful spindles/legs for tables. I am presently trying to cut some boards out of it on a bandsaw. We'll see how that comes out.

Looking good! To me, the coolest thing about a wood lathe is that you can take a junky looking piece of wood and turn it into beautiful artwork in a matter of minutes!
