Myself, D~Mo, Ben, and Zac headed to Deep South Texas to a friends ranch to shoot a couple of meat bulls this past weekend. This hunt is quickly becoming my favorite weekend of the year. We loaded up and made the 8+ hour drive.
This year was over the top as I was on the trigger first. My goal was something in a darker phase as I wanted to put one on the wall and the ranch delivered. Nothing beats riding around in the high rack with your buddies.
The plan was to spot and stalk around the ranch. It didn’t take long and we had the wind in our face and bulls on parade.
We caught a few bulls feeding into the wind so we jumped out and made the stalk. They had cleared one sendero already so he bounced over to the next. Luckily we got ahead of them and I was setup waiting for them to step clear of the brush. D~Mo’s dad Weatherby 300 Win Mag rang true and my Nilgai bull fell in his tracks.
Luckily there was the perfect picture spot close by with great light so Legdog should be proud of us.
Hank was very proud and protective of “his” bull.
The celebration was on as D~Mo cooked an awesome dinner of Prime Rib with some brown water on the side.
There is nothing better than a camp fire after meat in the cooler.
The next day Ben was on the trigger to add some meat to the cooler. He doesn’t look in kill mode here but he was ready.
Again the plan was to spot and stalk. We had a great seat for the event.
Ben was able to come through and dropped a meat bull as our hunting time was coming to an end. We watched through the binos as the beast soaked up his bullet. Hank was back on point and found him 50 yards in the brush.
With two bulls in the cooler and a great weekend with great friends we pointed north and headed home. It’s amazing the doors TBH has opened up to meet and become friends with awesome people. I’m truly a blessed man for having such great people in my life. I don’t kill a lot of animals, but the ones I do all have special meaning and this bull is no different. I can’t thank the ranch owner enough for the hospitality and the opportunity.
