I saw his dad pull in their driveway, then I looked again and he was gone. I said "I thought your Dad was home?" He finally spoke and said " He went back to work". Never said another word!

Good Job! Just a suggestion, but maybe tell him if he has good grades next term, keeps practicing, and helps keep your shooting area tidy after practice sessions you could see about helping him make his own self-bow.

That boy is looking for someone to please and look up to - looks like he chose you. If he feels like he earned/made a bow, that'll be better than the best store bought bow to him.
