To me it smells like typical government bs to make him the scapegoat for their inability to address this kid prior to these events unfolding

There is plenty of proof that the sheriff has failed the citizens of that community.
He tries to push the blame on guns and the NRA but the reality he needs to be fired, several FBI agents need to be fired and before it's all over possibly dozens of people failed to prevent or limit this event.
