Here is why I love hunting Mcaap

Every year I put in for the Mcaap control hunt. Here is a link as to why I love it so much there. No where else can you put in for a public hunt that you can only use a stick and a string to chase after a magnificent beast such as this one. I have had the opportunity to hunt Hagerman and Mcaap both, but there is just something special about hunting Mcaap.

I hear about this place every year but I always forget to apply.
How can I do that for the years to come?

The application process for hunting Mcaap is done by applying in the Oklahoma controlled hunts on wildlifedepartment.com website in April of every year and they usually post results right after the 4th of July. The best deer I ever saw there hunting went 184 and change a white hat shot him 2 weeks after I had a run in with him.

          White hat? Officers?

Looking at the photos, there are some monsters there!

White hats are the guys that are in charge of running the hunt on the base. They take everyone to the field, make sure everyone is safe, and will give you great advice on hunting there.

Everyone needs to do this hunt at least once. It's kind of rule-heavy but less than it used to be.

At one time the website had a video of a buck fight that was probably the most violent deer/deer encounter I've ever seen. I never could figure out why they took it down.

McALESTER, Okla. -- It's not going to happen this year, but sometime in the future the tall, slender sportsman in the beige cowboy hat who managed the renowned deer hunt at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant here for nearly two decades will likely retur...

I grew up an hour north of McAlester. Never have got to hunt it though. There are some monsters there and no telling how many die from old age. Another from their Top 10.

is it safe to assume you must be military to apply?

I'll be there in two weeks. I got drawn for Deer Creek. It will be my first time to hunt Mcaap.
