I don't use funnels on 55 gallon feeders, but on double stacks and 85 gallon feeders, I like a funnel. It allows the feeder to clean itself when it runs out and not have that "funnel" of old corn or protein along the sides. We use bulk corn a lot and it's dustier and dirtier and the funnel helps me clean the feeder without taking it down. Without a funnel, I'd take it down and clean it at least once per year.
I've had one of the funnels and barrels since we hunted Sonora in the early 90's. The rest were all gotten from Karl. There are rocks or weights on top of the lids of the first two feeders (Mailman and Bower). My two have heavy springs on two sides that attach to the barrel and lid to hold the lids on. The slip over lids give you a few days more corn and make it easier to fill. You don't have to worry about getting the lid and ring just right. With my springs, I can even put the lid on the barrel with a little hum in the corn and it'll settle over the next couple days of throwing.
I Have 80 Gallon Feeder And They Hold 10 Bags To The Top With Funnel And The Funnel Is About 8 Inchs Tall At The Top And Starts To Funnel Down.....so My Guess Is 10 1/2 To 11
