That is a male (reddish head) three toed box turtle.

Some of their legs and heads are real colorful.. I see quite a few around the mayhaw trees on my land when the berries are falling..

This dude was hanging out in Tyler. My thoughts are that he is a Three-Toed Box. Is this a native critter or possibly someone’s pet?

Thanks for all the replies. I found his red color interesting. I looked content and was not near any roads so I snapped his picture and let him be.

Used to catch those all the time growing up in Calvert,Tx. Fire ants I believe have put a good dent in the population.

Why? I can’t grasp the whole kill turtles for fun thing......
