Do I need a plug in my shotgun for Turkey or Quail?

I mainly use my 12 gauge for hunting hogs. I am going with a friend who said we can hunt some turkey and quial this weekend but I can't find my darn plug for my Remmington 870 pump. The way I read the regs is for migratory birds only need the plug?

I can cut a piece of dowel rod if someone can tell me the length of theirs in their 870 pump shotgun.

I use #5s.

Yep, no plug needed for turkey or quail. And #4s would be OK for turkey but not quail (7 1/2 or 8 shot). And use an extra full choke for the big birds and modified or improved cylinder for the little fliers...

Had a known peckaheaded game warden ask me and a buddy of mine if we had our plugs in our guns at the boat ramp after a morning of killin' ducks. Buddy said 'no sir"....I said "yes sir"........GW copped an attitude.....said "you know you are required to have a plug in your gun to hunt migratory birds right?" Buddy said "yes sir"...GW said "I'm gonna have to write you a ticket and gives him the "what for" about being an outlaw speech"....."let me see you gun" he says........Buddy hands his gun case while we watch the game warden pull out his Browning over/under. GW mumbles a few words under his breath and tells us to have a nice day.... The look on his face was priceless.....
