My son was 16 yrs old when he killed his first deer -a doe on a TYHP hunt. I walked up with him to the downed deer and showed him how and where to stand, and to check to make sure it was dead. I then told him that it was customary in many cultures to thank the animal for the sacrifice of its life and body, and then to either say a prayer or to pause for a few minutes in silence out of respect for the animal. I stressed that this was purely optional, but that I thought it was important. My son did thank the deer, and said a prayer for it, and placed some grass in its mouth as well. Afterwards, he asked what I would have done if he hadn’t had done any of the things (prayer, thanks, grass in the deer’s mouth). I told him those were his decisions to make, and that I would support them...but that would have been the last time I would have taken him hunting.
Regards,
Dave
