Since you are contemplating between these two, why not just split the difference & get a .280...I think this is the best round of the 06 case family.

Possibly, I will have a .300 one day.

Not sure if anyone saw the walmart deal alert thread but that is what this is in reference to. I realize .30-06 is practically the same as the .308, but this is just one of those "it's cheap, so why not?" decisions.

Research has statistically shown that while a 30-06 has a 91% fatality rate on whitetail deer in Texas for animals that were hit, the .270 suffers only a 7% chance of killing even the smallest field mouse.

The answer seems obviously, but you have to decide on your own.

In that case, for what you will likely be using it for, I think it is a coin flip b/w the 270 and 30-06. You can't go wrong with either.
