    axis quest...week two

Just got in from the axis lease. My brother Bobby and I left Thursday night and got up there, unpacked, and in bed at ... 3:30 Friday morning. After a refreshing 1 1/2 hour night's sleep, we were up and ready to go. I put Bobby in the cedar blind where I videoed the buck last week. I wandered up a hill to where I had cut out a cedar blind the week before and where I had located the two 8 points and the one with the BIG bow.

I've got a lot of pics to capture, and then I'll do some story tellin', but here's a teaser. This is the smallest of the two 8's and he's about 14 steps.

I never said I PASSED him. It's just a teaser pic. I have to do it in chronological order. I'm still capturing pics.

He's big and he's got stickers and he's close. I'd hold out too.

First morning, I dropped Bobby off at the cedar blind where I videoed the supposedly too small axis last week and went back to virgin territory where I had seen the big group of bucks last week. I crawled up into the cedar thicket and got comfortable on my 4 legged stool.

First thing that came in was a boar hog and he went right to my corn. I HATE hogs and especially hate them when they ruin hunts. I got the camera ready to record this hogs last few seconds on earth.

I happened to look to my left and decided the hog would have to wait. Several bucks were coming in and this wide one with velvet hanging off his horns was on his way. I figured just over 30 inches, wide, short coddles, decent brows, decent mass. He might do. I just didn't like the velvet and white horns.

He walked right in and gave me a perfect set-up for a shot.

Do I? What about the big ones? Well, before I had to decide, I look to the left and here comes a bigger one.

I got about 40 minutes of video of these deer. The more I watched this big one, the more I was convinced of two things. One, he was the buck I posted last week. Two, he's a lot bigger than I thought. 33/34 inch beams. Even though he's big, I'm still not ready to shoot him with lots of time remaining and knowing where those three bigger bucks live. So, since he's bigger than the wide buck, I let them both live another day and took video instead. Here's some pics from that morning. I also learned that axis bucks aren't afraid of hogs. They ran that boar hog ragged and when a big group of sows and pigs came in, they just ate right along with them, chasing them off as best they could. So, when pigs come in, the only bad thing when axis hunting is the fact that they vacuum all the corn. It won't run the deer off and it actually will help distract them.
