Today was a bust in the O.X. Compartment. Wind is horrible 20-25mph. We found a good area with a lot of sign. The wind is supposed to ease up in the morning 10-15mph. Maybe that’ll be enough to get the deer moving around more.

We didn’t see a single deer.


Talked to a guy that’s hunting Aermotor and he saw a few mule deer and some whitetail but didn’t get a shot.

Saw a few quail in the O.X. pasture.


This was my first time to hunt Matador. I enjoyed the time with my son.

I’m not sure how they determined the WMA has an overpopulation of doe. We covered a ton of ground yesterday afternoon and evening and again this morning. I found three sets of fresh tracks. Glassed even more ground from the higher points but the deer were nowhere to be found. There was TON of fresh yote tracks.

There was a lot of older deer sign there which has me perplexed as to where the deer may have been or went. I thought for sure they’d be down in the draws with the 20+mph wind Saturday afternoon/evening. Seen enough deer crap to fill up a 55 gallon drum but it was all old.

I went in a bit ill prepared for sleeping arrangements. While sleeping in the truck worked it wasn’t ideal and neither of us got more than 4 hours of sleep. That makes it tough when trying to cover miles of ground on foot.

That said I’d happily go back to Matador if I draw again next year. The staff is super friendly and willing to help however they can.
