                          My grandfather had some old saddles from the late 1800's early 1900's with something similar. He referred to it as a breast plate and it was part of the breast collar that held the saddle from sliding back. It also held the tie down or martingale going to the horses head.

                              When they say a Texas Martingale, is that the piece on the front of the breast strap of a saddle? At least that's what I'm thinking.
