I bow hunted once in October in 94 degree weather and saw very little. Went back opening weekend of gun season in 86 degree weather and again saw very little. Finally got back in the stand after Christmas. Last Thursday in Lavaca County was a drizzly cool morning. Feeder went off and it was still pretty dark. Two 6 points come to the feeder and jockey back and forth for the rights to the corn. Both of their heads pop up and stare to the south. I search hard through the mist and half darkness for what got their attention, but see nothing. Roughly 7-8 minutes go by and this buck comes to the feeder. I study him hard and decide to take him. Pull up the 30-06, settle the cross hairs and squeeze the trigger. Click....no boom. I pull up the bolt and reset it. Back on the target and click again. Had to eject the shell and quietly insert a new shell. The buck hears the slight clink and acts like he is going to check out of there. I quickly settle the pin and fire. This is my personal best. Looking forward to the 2018 season.
