Beans with minimal meat for seasoning only is a side. Beans with at least 1 pound of meat per 3 people is a meal.

Not to derail but my wife argues that dirty rice isn't a meal but we ate it several times with crackers when I was growing up. Maybe we were poorer than I remember.

To answer the Op, number two.

When I was growing up, cornbread and sweet milk was a meal, and we were poor too, and I remember every bit of it, but I didn't know it until I got grown.
