Don't eat any of your kill until they have been in the trees during at least one good freeze.

Guess my family has a super charged immune system. Don’t think I have ever squirrel hunted after a freeze since it’s deer season.....unless you count May.

I always wondered if they made year round squirrel season in certain counties because the number of squirrel hunters was too low to maintain population numbers?



Or if it is just the counties that rake in money from the pecan industry that petitioned TPWD to let them hammer the squirrel?

That is a good question.

I have not been in a while. But Opening day of squirrel in SWLA is one of my favorite childhood memories! Bigger deal than dove season in TX.

We don't ever get a "good freeze" in SWLA. And the squirrels are always tasty. I like the medium sized greys. The big fox squirrels taste more like cat.

Which is probably why I take blood pressure and cholesterol meds now.

Squirrel hunting as a kid and teenager with an open sight 22 sure made me a better shot. Always tried to shoot them in the head so I wouldn't mess them up too bad.
And the kicker is that I don't really like the taste of squirrels. I always found someone who wanted them before I went hunting.

They are hard to hunt in LA for sure. We used to run dogs after them.
