    Big yellow spot and I thump them---if the sound is "flat" and not hollow--no go. A good ripe one sounds hollow--'least that is what grandma taught me.

            Yep! I remember driving out to McCook as a kid, and we'd stop by a field that had already been picked & load up. At lunch, we'd split em open, eat the dark red heart, pitch the rest on the ground and move on to the next one. [emoji1303]

                        Yep you gotta master the thump. My Arkansas relatives all knew how to read the thump on whether or not a melon was ready to eat. The thump says it all.

                            Huh! I always thought you used a fair sized pocket knife to cut a triangle into it then sample the plug you pulled out, it helps if you have a friend along to keep the fruit stand person busy until you find the one you want.
