Rem. 700 BDL stock cut down and re-attach

I bought this Rem. 700 ADL from a fellow tbh'er and am going to give it to one of my grandkids. But I want it to be something they will use for a lifetime so I need to cut it down for now and put it back together when they get older.
    Here's what I'm starting with.

Let's get rid of the plastic stock and use something special. I purchased an older BDL walnut stock.

First step is cutting off 1.25"

I put the painters tape on to prevent chipping and protect the finish.

Next, installing a new recoil pad. I got a Limbsaver medium grind to fit. I traced out the stock on the bottom of the pad and cut it outside the lines so I could grind it to the final size after mounting.

Now to re-attach the piece I cut off.
First I screw it to a 1/8" thick piece of Cherry wood.

Then cut off most of the excess Cherry.

Now sand the Cherry down to match the stock.

Before doing anything else, I put a finish on the Cherry and sealed the walnut stock where it was cut. I let this dry overnight.

I've done it on a Marlin 22, but mine didn't look near as nice as yours.
