I used ductape to remove the scales. Takes about 2 or 3 passes to get them all. Peel off tape against the grain.

Flat cam and/or roller lifter lost it's needle bearings. Chevy has had some problems with heat treatment on the cams not getting the lobes hardened properly. Not sure who grinds their cams but IMO...
