In a flatter area, I could see not needing them but we are hunting extraordinarily steep country and they are a requirement IMO. We also use tarps as shelters and the poles are needed there as well.

They are out year round in TX. Like mentioned above, if it warms up for a few days in January you can find them sunning. I have one that’s mounted that is close to 6’6” that I killed in December.
