Official Lake Whitney And Aquilla 2017-2018 Hunting Thread

Waiting is over, it is time!!!!

First, it is my HONOR to start this thread!

Deer season is just around the corner. It is long, yet it is too short. It comes and goes in a blink of eye, not to mention the dove, teal, duck and turkey seasons. But as Texas Grown says, " Fish is biting and pigs are to be killed." We have a year long of fun and excitement waiting for us to enjoy.

Having hunting public land for 10 years, here is some thought:

1) Hunting public land is a Privilege
Love, protect, and preserve the privilege . If you don't, it may be taken away.

2) Work Hard, Play Hard
Hunting public land is not easy. It requires a lot of time and effort.
Put in your time, result will come.

3) Without Grace, No Peace
Hunters are very competitive and protective. Nobody wants his/her hunting area got disturbed. So be alert other hunter's set up, avoid or leave it alone.

4) "Good Luck" vs "God Bless"
Every harvest or catch is a gift from above. So be thankful!

Then,
"Practice, Practice, and Practice!"
"Practice Makes Perfect!"
"Aim Small, Miss Small!"

Finally,
May God bless us all to have a safe and fruitful season!

Sincerely,

Sam

That is a grand opening to the new thread Sam! Well put. And well done~!

The best to everyone out there. May your freezer and memories be blessed with being full this season. Thoughtfulness goes a long way in all that you do for others, and your selves. :)

justindfw 08-05-2017 09:54 PM

Good opening. And was nice meeting you today chino. Hope everyone has a fruitful season.

Storm 08-06-2017 04:47 AM

Now that's the way to start things off. It was great meeting you yesterday chino.

Razorback01 08-06-2017 05:16 AM

Nice opening Mr, or Ms Chino.

chino 08-06-2017 07:37 AM

Getting old☹️
Mind, eyes and fingers were not coordinating the way it should be.

No excuse!!!

Appreciated

Texas Grown 08-06-2017 08:32 AM

Getting old sounds like good excuse to me. Or, that's the one I use anyway. :D

Texas Grown 08-06-2017 08:08 PM

OK. Day #2 of the new thread, and this is only post #8? :D

Anybody been out scouting yet?

Deafishunter 08-06-2017 08:13 PM

Planning on hunting there for my first time.

Any tips on areas to scout at?

Texas Grown 08-06-2017 09:15 PM

DH, They all have game. I would not say one is any better than the other. Key is knowing the area/unit, and how the deer act/react, and what other hunters are doing.

Ender 08-07-2017 08:25 AM

Chino like the opening especially #1 of your points. Storm, I just looked ahead and I will be off on opening weekend so I may swing up there and visit with y'all. Sorry I missed the gtg the other day I've been busy lately and only check back in here occasionally. I'm as excited about this season as I have ever been, planned on going and scouting today while it was cool but we have a lot going on today so maybe tomorrow. I really wanted to sell my John boat and buy a kayak this year but doesn't look like happening. Here's to everyone's season hope you all find that booner you're looking for

The woods are a pretty good place [emoji3].

If you're willing to get away from most other hunters, you'll have better luck. Just remember everything that you scout on a map looks good to every other hunter that is able to use google earth. Nothing beats boots on the ground!

BowhunterKPH 08-07-2017 02:48 PM

Great opening to the 2017-2018 season Chino! This will be my second season bow hunting public land and I'm extremely excited. I've been scouting now for 3 weeks and things are looking positive! It has been CRAZY HOT out there, so take plenty of water with you, for those putting in the hard work pre-season.

Storm, thank you again for your help last season. If you need assistance this season please know, I will return the favor. I've been scouting the same location from last year and it's looking good, so that is where I'll be this coming season. :D

Good Luck to everyone this coming season, be safe & God Bless!

chino 08-07-2017 03:12 PM

I haven't been out there for a while. I know grass is tall, mosquitos are plenty.
Bug spray and snake boots are your friend, and a lot of water .

Razorback01 08-07-2017 03:23 PM

The grass is REAL tall, I hardly recognized the areas I've hunted before, had to keep looking at the GPS to ensure I was in the right spot. Seems that most of the new growth than made it tough was the honeylocust, thorny suckers.

Don't forget your invited to the gtg on that Friday night at Plowman park.

Storm 08-07-2017 05:01 PM

For those of you that don't know Plowman will be closed after opening weekend til March 2018 , no reason was given.

Texas Grown 08-07-2017 05:23 PM

That is 6 months it will be closed Storm. They may not have found two couples willing to man the gates for the winter. It's on a contract basis. And each applicant(s) has to bid on the contract. And meet the qualifications.

Storm 08-08-2017 04:53 PM

Open or closed I'm still going down to Whitney, I still have my spots for opening weekend so I'm happy for that.

Texas Grown 08-08-2017 05:24 PM

Amen to that! ;)b

Ispdnxs 08-09-2017 09:03 AM

Hunted Whitney all last year, figured I would introduce myself this year rather than sit in the background. It is a fantastic privilege that we have to be able to hunt this land. As I have seen a few others mentioned, several of the areas are way overgrown from where they were last year. I am hoping that this growth has helped the fawns survive. Saw plenty of Fawns coming up to the Independence Day holiday. Good luck to y'all this year and I wish everyone a safe and successful season.

Texas Grown 08-09-2017 06:46 PM

Texas Grown 08-11-2017 09:26 PM

Nice one Storm. Tell me about it. Type, poundage, ect.

The fish are biting, and there's hogs to be kilt. Gotta go!

SlabHappy 08-11-2017 11:54 PM

Hi

Just thought I would say hi. Never did make it out last year, but planning to get my first deer this year. I have never really hunted much, but have done some homework, and plan to make it out a few times, by boat, to scout a few areas and possibly put out a few cams. I have to get at least one deer this year, to shut my wife up about all the money I've spent, and never even been out. If you see me out, say hi, and give me any pointers, Bc God knows, I need them. Also, anyone got any pointers on Whitney crappie? May have to combine scouting with crappie fishing. If ne1 wants to come along, give me a shout, I would love to have some company...

LWArchery 08-12-2017 03:08 PM

How is it going gents? I haven't been on here in a long time! Life is keeping me super busy with my new business, studying for promotions and keeping up with the kiddos! I hope to hunt this year. Last year was the first time I have ever not bought a hunting license. Yall stay safe out there this year!

Texas Grown 08-12-2017 09:44 PM

LW! Good to see you posting! Been missing ya here. How is the Lil Forest Princess? Sounds like your living life fully. :D

3) Without Grace, No Peace
Hunters are very competitive and protective. Nobody wants his/her hunting area got disturbed. So be alert other hunter's set up, avoid or leave it alone.

It's public, be courteous and don't leave your mark. People want to own public, but there isn't ownership. Think about how bad the guy that did his reasearch, hikes in with a stand, and finds someone decided to leave their stand (against the rules). Yet they are the a**h*** for hunting there? I know what you likely meant by you post but **** the people that seem to think public=my private spot

Storm 08-13-2017 09:47 AM

Deer are looking real good this year.

justindfw 08-13-2017 08:27 PM

I need to go check my spots and maybe scout for a new spot or two.

Texas Grown 08-13-2017 08:32 PM

Think I'm gonna go look for a new spot too.

..................uh........wait. I can't do that. There ain't no new spots. Only new spots I know for sure are on this year's fawns. :D

Hope yall all do well this coming season! ;)b

Bad2TheBone 08-14-2017 03:35 PM

Is it to late to apply for a permit?

Razorback01 08-14-2017 03:45 PM

Yes, permits are already gone. They go quick.

But, your are in luck! Permits for 2017-2018 should be available starting tomorrow after you get your new hunting license.
