Let's rebuild a truck! (Long term thread)

7 Attachment(s)
We have purchased 4 of the new DEF running trucks for our fleet, 2 in 2012 and 2 in 2013. We have sold 2 of them and will sell the other 2 as soon as our new(old) trucks are rebuilt from the ground up.
Here are pics of the first of the new group. The frame will be painted to match the cherry on the fender and the cab will match the silver. All boxes, side flares, and stacks will be black.

Let's rebuild a truck! (Long term thread)

What is reason selling the DEF trucks? DEF cost or overall efficiency?

SaltwaterSlick 04-14-2016 04:08 PM

Wow Tim, those things are too purdy to drive down tha road and into them nasty plants!! Y'all must have a good painter! The frame on the one under construction is wild!

bobc 04-14-2016 04:12 PM

Those are some sweet looking rigs! ....and that wiring harness is a mess.

topshot 04-14-2016 04:30 PM

wow, i can only guess the amount of man-hours and $$ into a rebuild. beautiful!

The DEF systems have an enormous upkeep requirement that has shut the DEF trucks down for over a week flushing out the filtration system. The heat generated by the filter system is unbelievable and it sits under the passenger side floorboard thus generating heat into the cab. We had to rebuild 2 DEF engines last year and that was the straw that broke the camels back. We rebuilt them and sold them.
We are still having code problems with the 2012 and have to run it into Peterbilt about once a month for a look see and a little work.

Artos 04-14-2016 04:53 PM

in...good stuff right here amigo!!

perow 04-14-2016 04:53 PM

I have a couple customers that have done the glider kits and been very happy.

I feel your pain. We have a whole fleet of DEF freightliners and they are a PITA. We have had several trucks crystallize the DEF system that had to be replaced.

AddisonOil 04-14-2016 06:24 PM

Yeah, I was missing a tracker and they looked and looked and finally found it still hooked up in that mess. ;)b

Buckshot-73 04-16-2016 08:06 AM

What shaftslinger said... The NatGas trucks are even worse.

Tmag, those are some classy rigs. Should last another million miles.

They finally finished sanding the body and hood down and shot some paint, clear coated yesterday. The only problem with silver is you can see every little ripple or waiver in the skin, paint job turned out purdy!

We have about 5 of them to rebuild. Boss is staying on them to keep moving, took too long on the last one.

That's some beautiful rigs y'all got there

Slickrick 07-11-2016 02:05 PM

With all the trouble with the DEF, any chance of them coming up with something that works better. I think I liked it better when we weren't so worried about the environment.

Rubberdown 07-12-2016 09:28 PM

Dude... You need an Optimus Prime paint job. Your trucks look bad ace!

Yeah, they are mixing a little chrome in on the air tanks and trim work. Wheels are gonna be our standard polished aluminum.

I need to get a few more pics today, they are working on it kinda slow with other stuff hitting the shop daily.

BURTONboy 07-13-2016 11:58 AM

In for this. Some good looking trucks!

A few more pieces added, chrome air tanks and grab bars on back of the cab along with black stacks and chrome trim. And the engine being rebuilt for it, probably in the 500-600 hp range.

Jake (not from State Farm)

3 Attachment(s)
Just walked by the build and found Jake sitting on a bucket dealing with the wiring harness. Jake's Dad is our master mechanic and oversee's the build as Jake put's together his 3rd rebuild for us. This kid is learning at leaps and bounds from his Dad, most of the paint job on this truck was put on by Jake. And just shy of building the motor(his Dad is doing that), Jake has put almost every piece back together on this truck. ;)b

And the candidate for the Optimus is just sitting around waiting it's turn. ;)b :D

There is another truck in front of it to be built and I still have to talk the boss into it. Probably gonna end up an old looking truck with some patina left on it.
