Menard 2018-2019 season thread

Who all is hunting out there this year? How are things looking for you

Ttt

stonecold 05-10-2018 09:33 PM

We hunt south of town. Was pretty dry the last time we were there in April. Put out two tons of protein and filled the corn slingers. Won't go back till June or July.

stonecold 05-10-2018 09:34 PM

Where are ya'll located?

We received about two inches or rain on the ranch 12 south of Menard last week while I was at the NRA Convention and .9" here in town. Most of the country north of Menard got about an inch, not sure about Ft. McKavett. We are in need of good, general rain if we want to see average or above antler growth. Deer are really hitting feeders and if are feeding protein, not sure how much good you are getting unless it is free choice.
Looks like the Weather Channel is giving us a chance of rain for the middle of next week, hope they are right.
Adios,
Gary

We have free choice and they have crushed it

elliscountyhog 05-11-2018 11:33 AM

First season out that way. Off 190 west of town near Clear Lake. Excited to see what is around. 1000 acres.

droebuck 05-11-2018 12:20 PM

We are in the SE corner of the county between London and Hext. We had a good Turkey season and we are excited to see the antler growth start to develop, this is our first year on this lease.

We're close...one county over. The whitetails and axis are killing our protein in McCulloch County. We need rain...

We had a good little storm come through a week or so ago but need more as well. Going down this weekend to fill feeders and see if we can get an axis

stonecold 05-15-2018 03:08 AM

Looks like there was some rain in the area last night.

Ya we might have got a little on our place. Brady looked like it got a good soak

DUKFVR 05-15-2018 06:20 AM

Looks like through Hext, calf creek toward Mason got up to 3 in. There was a strong cell move down that line.

wilcox1088 05-15-2018 06:48 AM

We are about 8 miles west of town. Got about 1” a few weeks ago, ranch looked really good but could always use more. Going back in a couple weeks to fill feeders back up, deer are hammering the protein

Lee230 05-15-2018 07:08 AM

I followed that cell on radar as it passed through Brady until it moved south of the London/Junction area. Looked like great rainfall and small hail but nothing too large according to the radar. Our local weather guy in Austin reported pockets of 4 plus inches in spots in Northwest Mason County and 3 inches from Brady to just south of Hext/London.

Gary Roberson 05-15-2018 08:41 AM

I had .55" on the west side of Menard. Most folks east of Menard had an inch to up to 4 inches. I am afraid that the SW part of the county may have missed most of it.
Adios,
Gary

Hopefully we got some near Waddell

We are about 10miles west of town. You seeing many axis or other exotics?

wilcox1088 05-15-2018 03:20 PM

We have a good herd of B.B. but no axis. We try and manage the B.B. the best we can

MenardCountyBow 05-15-2018 08:27 PM

Looks like another good cell came through

Lee230 05-15-2018 08:33 PM

Happening now! 5 inches in Hext yesterday and now another wave.

Lee230 05-15-2018 08:44 PM

My brother is in Hext now and they have received 2.5 additional inches so far from this cell and it's still raining. No hail thankfully.

MenardCountyBow 05-15-2018 08:54 PM

Hopefully we got some as well.

SV72 05-15-2018 08:57 PM

I am off Wilhelm Lane and our place is very dry. I am hoping we are getting a good shot tonight. The deer are killing our protein free choice feeders.

We are on Waddell. Must not be too far from us

Huntindad 05-15-2018 09:18 PM

don't mean to sidetrack this thread, but... some of y'all have mentioned axis and other exotics... I am looking in the Menard area(among others) for some property to retire on. I would like to have exotics on the place.

For you folks in McCulloch & Menard counties, where would be a good place to look for land that has exotics?

I Have talked to realtors about the ranches split up about 12 miles SW of Eden... are there others.

I hunt out towards Kerrville and can not get the axis to come to a feeder for nutin. They pass through though.

If youíre talking about the mesquite springs subdivision I havenít heard anything good about it. We have axis and blackbuck. we are on the NW side of the county. Iíve seen them in ft mckavett and a few dead ones outside London. Junction has a good bit of exotics as well

ttaxidermy 05-16-2018 03:54 AM

Some serious flooding occurred in the last 2 days between Brady and Menard.. Our stock tanks went from being very low to running around the dams.. It takes a lot of water to do this.. We also had 400 feet or so of fence washed out and a gate was washed out also.. We had Damaging hail and very high wind too.
In 19 years on this place we have seen some very serious rains but we have never lost any fence.. On the radar we had pink setting over us for several hours. I have no idea how much water fell but it was A LOT!!!!!!

trophy8 05-16-2018 08:00 AM

We are between hext and mason. Needing rain and it sounds like we got some!! Right off CR1222. Got a few bucks I’m hoping blow up this year. Pounding the protein. I gotta get back and fill them up again. They are most certainly empty but corn is spinning. Work has me tied up

Gary Roberson 05-16-2018 08:57 AM

I got another .7" at the house yesterday evening. Lots of wind!!!!
If you are looking for land in the area, give me a call as I sell a few ranches and know everyone here as I was President of Menard Bank for 7 years.
I would not buy any land in any of the subdivisions as the tracts are too small to hunt and most do not have water and you will never be able to get water. I will say that Menard County may be the best buy as values are not as high as Mason or Kimble Counties and the hunting is generally better and the soils are more fertile.
Adios,
Gary

i was seeing tracts in Lost Trail Ranch & Live Oak Creek...

why no water ? can a well be drilled? I am looking for a place to retire and have exotics on it...mostly to watch...some to fill the freezer :)

Gary Roberson 05-16-2018 01:31 PM

There is no ground water in some areas of the county. They have drilled four wells in the Mesquite Springs subdivision and so far one of them is producing a quart a minute.
Adios,
Gary

Geronimo2091 05-16-2018 03:09 PM

Does anyone know the rain totals in London? I know it isn't too far from Hext, just not sure if the rain made it that far.

Gary Roberson 05-16-2018 03:48 PM

It has rained the last two evenings, depending where you are I would say 2"-4" most likely. Junction did not get any on Monday but got about 1.5" yesterday.
Adios,
gary

LCRA is showing 2 - 5 inches in that area over the last 3 days. The further ssw you go the less it is. Gary is right about the 1.5 in Junction.

Hey fellas! New to the area. We are hunting at 1773 and 1221 in SE Menard County! We have been up there twice this year and the place shows promising signs! Anybody hunt in that area can give me any input as to what we can expect? We have jumped up turkeys and wt on both visits! Thanks, buddy.

Lee230 05-17-2018 09:29 AM

Welcome to the neighborhood Buddy! I have hunted the area north and south of you for close to thirty years. If you feed, they will come. Lots of deer and the Axis trickle in and out. A good deer in that area will be 120'ish, a great deer will be 130'ish. You will see lots of young bucks and good numbers. The rut really amps up just before Thanksgiving and we have found great success in the secondary rut in early December. Pay attention to those low water crossings as they can fill up fast and may hinder your travel. Lots of folks on this forum hunt close so will get more feedback. Welcome again and good luck this season.

Buddy2009 05-17-2018 09:37 AM

Awesome! Yeah we put up cameras this last go around just to get a feel of what’s out there. The first night we had turkeys, a few does, and one buck. Looked to be mature but a little early to tell. Thanks for the info and I can’t wait to hear more! Can’t seem to figure out how to post a pic or I’d show you the one we have. Any help?

Lee230 05-19-2018 01:57 PM

Sorry Bud, I do not post pics. Someone will chime in though.

Weíve seen axis right at the intersection of 1221 and 1773

droebuck 05-19-2018 10:22 PM

Good rain falling on the SE corner of the county right now.
