LBJ Grassland 2017

Only 4 more months until bow season! Who's excited?

Muddman 06-24-2017 09:40 AM

I work the entire month of October, but I'll be out there with my muzzleloader in November. This will be the first bow season I've missed in a long time.

Brentwalkertx 06-24-2017 10:32 AM

Havent been out in a while and ready to get back out there.pretty excited about the upcoming season. Found a spot last year that looked really promising. Only got to sit 2 times last year. And promised myself that i would sit more this year

Razorback01 06-24-2017 01:35 PM

Might try to head up tomorrow for a look around, may be the last semi-cool day for a couple of months.

Did you make it out today? Me and a buddy went out and scouted out a unit. Saw 3 does and 2 fawns. And tons of tracks.

Razorback01 06-26-2017 06:15 AM

Yes, about 7-10am. Saw 1 doe and a surprising number of tracks considering less than 24 hours since the rain. I'll post up some pics this evening.

Can't wait!

I saw that stand about 6 weeks ago while scouting. Really surprised they laeve it year round. Especially considering its not far from the gate at all.

Always nice to have somwone else set up a stand for you haha.

Texas Grown 06-26-2017 09:09 PM

Someone should clip a laminated note to it's seat. And see how long it stays attached. :D

Or spray paint the bottom section Flow Orange so no one shoots that direction. :D

troy_w_7 06-26-2017 11:06 PM

I've been hitting google earth pretty hard, looking for a few new spots. I probably won't get boots on the ground until August/September. I'm still waiting on the Grapevine draw to see if I'll be spending most of my time there or at LBJ.

Heck yah! They'd prob get a special one for it not being discovered sooner if it's that close to the gate. From the pics, I would bet he knows right about where it is too. :D

I'll be out there checking a camera tomorrow myself. Never while hunting but driving in one moning I saw a pretty good size one crossing the road and go under a fence into a unit. This was around 4:30am though.

Brentwalkertx 07-02-2017 07:07 AM

Ok cool. Might have to start looking around for them. Was curious if it could be true or hes full of it.

Txbowslaughter 07-02-2017 09:15 AM

Two weeks ago I saw a bunch of good signs of pigs and heard them as the night came, no luck making a shot though.

Went out today and looked around with my son. We saw 3 deer. And found a spot that looks like hogs have been there alot. Might have to go back out next week. Anyone else go out??

Rich1201 07-03-2017 06:38 AM

Checked the camera at my new spot yesterday. Does coming through pretty regular and one hog showed up twice in about a month's time. Hopefully this remains the pattern for opening day. Didn't scout any new areas though.

Brentwalkertx 07-03-2017 03:46 PM

Glad to hear your having stuff show up on camera.

hogman$ 07-03-2017 10:33 PM

Wish I lived closer have 3 cameras up right now planning on going end of this month got about a 5 hour drive at least I hope I still have 3 cameras there

I'm hoping to get out and do some scouting. I want to check out two different plots. One for signs of pigs the other to see if I can see any good signs of deer. I found this shed not to long ago and want to find a good spot for deer season. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c2aff43141.jpg

Thats a nice shed. My son, a friend and i have been scouting a few time this year. The spots i had to myself 2 years ago had people there last year. So looking for some good new spots this year.

Yeah I've been wondering about that as well, how many people will be hunting the public lands come deer season. I've found a few places that might be good spots, just hope it won't be crowded. I went out last week and found where someone has their trailcams and ladders so I'll continue scouting and looking for signs.

Always a great idea to have multiple spots scouted and ready to go on public land.

Brentwalkertx 07-07-2017 07:13 PM

Yeah im trying to have a few spots. Still want to see some hogs. Found 2 areas ive seen signs. But still want to see onw.

Get a map from Google or on Monday goto the office and get a map. It'll help you find different plots.

First time poster.

Started hunting LBJ late in the season last year and I've seen good signs. I've had a couple of cams up in different locations and I always have deer, hogs, coons, whatever on them.

Not a ton, but over the period of a month I'll always have multiple critters on the cams. One cam has a couple of bucks on it though they are probably just 2 year olds I'd think. Anyway, saw them in June with some having a little antler growth so I'm anxious to get back out there to check the cams again and see if they're back and what their antlers are doing.

Went out last weekend to check two of my three cams and jumped two deer in two different locations, both snorted at me quite a bit. When I checked the other cam several weeks ago I had another one snort at me.

Not sure if they were bucks or not, all I could see was body mass as they darted through the woods.

Bottom line is there are lots of good signs. Really enjoy the Grasslands, it's an incredible asset to have so close to home.

I'm headed back out today to check on my cams and scout a little. Best to luck to everybody.

Went out today. Didnt do much scouting. Son wanted to fish. Did see a bobcat driving through a unit. Anyone else get out this weekend?

Razorback01 07-09-2017 06:14 PM

Welcome Drycreek.

troy_w_7 07-09-2017 08:32 PM

I went out today with my dad. We walked a new unit but I couldn't get to the spot I wanted to. The brush just got too tall and thick. I have to find a new route to get there. I went to one of my usual spots and put up a trail cam where I had a few bucks coming in last year. We'll see what happens.

Txbowslaughter 07-09-2017 08:45 PM

I'm going to try to get out there next weekend.

Went out on Saturday and checked all three cams I have out. Cam 1 was in a new location for just a week. Have a couple of does on it. One doe and a yearling. They looked super skittish. Wonder if that's because my fresh scent was everywhere. Anyway, I set it up on a massive rub from last year on one of those cedar/juniper trees. I notice the deer like to mark those particular trees, I've seen a rub on one other type of tree and every other one is on a juniper. Anyway, I looked around the area and there were several other large rubs from the previous season. So it's a good spot and there was definitely a buck working the area but he may have got got last year so who knows. Need to see if he shows his face on the cam.

Cam 2 has two or three bucks in the area from what I can tell, one may be a shooter this fall the other two are either yearlings or small two year olds. I'll keep an eye on them but honestly, I'm not sure any would be worth taking this year. Give them another year and I think you'd have a pretty decent buck to try and take.

Cam 3 had been out for a week and had nothing but a blue tick coon hound on it. This is the area where I jumped two different deer last weekend. Lots of signs in this area and this cam is set up on a nice rub that I hunted last year. There was some really large deer scat in the area too so trying to see if I can get a buck to show his face.

I walked several miles in that heat and humidity through some pretty thick stuff and the pounding sun and it almost took me out. I mean man it was hot. Had plenty of water but was about a second thought away from stripping down and jumping into one of the ponds I came across.

This public land hunting is tough man. But I really enjoy it. It's certainly the definition of the word hunting.

Yes I was told no closed season. I spent the night on a plot one night with my fiancee. Wish we would of had red lights, we heard a big boar and he sounded mad. I've found good signs on a few plots.
