Somerville 2016-17

After a couple years away from the area its that time again. I live in Austin and planning a scouting trip soon if anyone wants to hook up.
Wondering if it look similar to last year with all the rain.

Oneal433 06-23-2016 08:42 AM

Where u wanting to go scout

Archer23 06-23-2016 08:50 AM

Yegua is preferred. In years past I hunting nails early in the season and was covered with people because it's so easy to navigate/easy access.
In yegua you can get back in and see less people early from my experience.

Eagle19 06-23-2016 08:54 AM

For deer or ducks? That whole place has been flooded out with all the rain

Deer

BrandonH 06-23-2016 08:59 AM

I don't think you'll have much luck scouting anytime soon. The entire area is still under water.

Champlaya7 06-25-2016 09:37 AM

I live in San Marcos and hunted out there quite a bit last year, Nails and Yegua. If we get rains again, even once, like we did last summer, it's gonna be a water park in there. Plenty of times I drove out there and had to turn back around because of the ragining creeks. Only if it's like last year though, hoping it stays drier this season!

Archer23 06-26-2016 07:05 PM

Hopefully the rains hold off and we have a good crop of acorns to hold the deer.
Planning on heading out mid-late July if anyone wants to tag along. May camp at the camp ground if it's open.

treehound 07-05-2016 03:20 PM

Are you allowed to park along the highways/roads to access or do you have to park at the on-sight registration?

treehound 07-15-2016 10:50 AM

Hello?...

Archer23 07-18-2016 09:25 AM

Not sure.

Anyone been out?

I'll be out in 2 weeks.

jhuddleston 07-18-2016 09:27 AM

water is still very high on somerville, not sure what all you will be able to scout in the creek area.

Duckthwacker 07-23-2016 12:43 PM

Going to be different. Very tough for a someone whondoesnt know the land. Right now it is looking like it will bring all the hunter closer to each other so I expect the hunting to be harder than normal on anything more than a year old lol. Good luck and I think I'm just going to fish out of my tree stand instead of carrying a bow. Hmmmmm never shot a duck from a tree stand either....... Might have to check that one off the bucket list

BURTONboy 07-23-2016 01:15 PM

The lake is still pretty high right now. I wouldnt bother anytime soon really. Its dropping, but it isnt dropping fast.

It's down to ~11' above normal pool now and slowly falling. It was over 22' high.

Archer23 08-06-2016 05:54 PM

Heading out next weekend for a scouting trip. Hope to find a couple good spots for the opener.

I'm thinking of doing some scouting this weekend. Has anyone heard when Nails Creek State Park will open back up?

Archer23 08-18-2016 09:38 AM

It was damp out there 2 weekends ago. I bet it's flooded now.

Gonna make it a little rough getting in away from the road hunters.

BURTONboy 08-18-2016 11:34 AM

Ya we've had 6"+ of rain in the area so far this week. I bet it has quite a bit of standing water again.

Nice fish

Champlaya7 08-18-2016 06:37 PM

Its alright, means instead of leaves crunching from approaching deer it'll be puddles splashing! hahaha

Champlaya7 08-18-2016 07:07 PM

In seriousness, it will more than likely be another year like last year. Tons of mosquitoes from standing water everywhere, full chest waders needed to cross creeks, and a few days where ya just drive out there, see the creek, and drive right back home.

I'll be out there a few weeks before the opener, I'll update what the creeks are looking like.

Hoggwild 08-18-2016 07:08 PM

Positive note, Yegua is dropping...

Wow, Yegua really didn't get too high up, comparative to last year at least. I remember when it was up there in the orange shaded region last October!

Hoggwild 08-19-2016 08:20 PM

Anyone Else happen to catch the photos on FB from the trailway of the bachelor groups? Some studs...

Are these photos from the Nails Creek State Park? Awesome bucks!

...Just saw its Birch Creek State Park off the trailway. Photos like that will get ya up and wanting to hunt!

Archer23 08-20-2016 06:24 AM

Great deer. My bet is that they never enter the public hunting area. Biggest buck I've seen out there two years ago was a 130 class ten point chasing a doe across the road near nails creek. He was real nice.

Birch is on the other side, can you even hunt over there?

I think by draw permit only. Point was that bucks like that don't spend much time if any in the hunting area.

treehound 08-20-2016 09:46 AM

One of the biggest deer I've seen in person was at Yegua State Park. Perfect 12. That said those deer know where the safety zones are. The are practically tame in around the parks just doe laying everywhere. This is absolutely not the case for the public area. Why would they leave when the doe are literally thick around the parks.

XBOW STALKER 08-20-2016 09:54 AM

Good luck out there this season

Hoggwild 08-20-2016 07:47 PM

With creek at 4.6 today it was still within the banks. 2-3ft from busting over. We're at 6ft now. Any dry land that was there is about to go under. Replay of yalls season last year. This could keep everything underwater till opener.

I feel like I saw a "banned" tag where it used to say "Pope and Young" on his banner. Not sure what happened, met him last year around this time and helped me get my Archery Club at Texas State University off the ground. Great guy whose valuable input about the area will be missed this year!

That just means no one will be tromping around in there for the next month or so. Sounds like a great plan devised by Mother Nature to help keep the pressure down, might help us see more in the late season (when the hunting actually gets half decent)

BURTONboy 08-21-2016 05:51 AM

With the rain thats coming down right npw on top of the terrential down pour last night, it will be inaccessible for a while I bet. I dont know how much rain we had last night, but a neighbor was tubing down his driveway in it and he lives on a hill...

Right now burleson county is under flash flood watch...i live less than a mile from welch park...we do not need more rain in somerville...scouting right now you will need hip waders.
