A cutting board

1 Attachment(s)
A friend asked me to make a cutting board with an inlay. I was going to do a silver wire inlay, but when I told my buddy how much it would cost, he decided against it. By this time I was already jazzed about making the board, so I went ahead and made it for myself without a wire inlay. One of these days, I'm going to do a wire inlay in something. Maybe a knife handle.

This cutting board is walnut and padauk with maple and walnut accents.

Too darn nice to be chopping up onions on that's for sure!!

Need to put that thing in a frame or some kind of display.

Neuse 02-07-2018 07:18 AM

That is gorgeous.
How about some details please?

Neuse 02-07-2018 07:19 AM

Oh sorry, didn't see the last sentence.

Nice

That is very nice. I think a wire inlay on a knife would be cool. Wire on a cutting board that my knife blade is going across doesn't sound so good.

SamHarper 02-07-2018 08:43 AM

There would be a display side and a cutting side, so you wouldn’t cut on the wire inlay.

idogtoys 02-13-2018 01:16 AM

what is the price of a cutting board?

SamHarper 02-13-2018 05:09 PM

I don't know. This is my first one, and I made it for myself, although I may give it to my brother. And I have to use my brother-in-law's tools to make them because I don't have the tools, and that adds an extra burden. So I guess I'm going to have to decline making any cutting boards for anybody. Sorry.

Did you stain that wood red? I am going to make a diploma frame for my wife, TTU, and want to inlay red into a black frame

SamHarper 02-13-2018 05:59 PM

No, it's padauk. It's naturally that colour. Sometimes it's a little more orange, and sometimes it's a little more brown.

RR 314 02-13-2018 06:09 PM

That is awesome. Does padauk come in more of a purple tint as well? Perhaps my brain is failing me.

I've never seen it with a purple tint. Or, if I have, maybe I mistook it for being purple heart.

I found this on the ol' googler. Haven't even thought about padauk in thirty years, but the stuff I used was flat out purple. . .don't even remember the brown part. Don't be surprised if yours turns purple! Will look great either way.

Padauk Overview
LATIN: PTEROCARPUS SOYAUXII ORIGIN: WEST AFRICA

Padauk is an exotic wood that is a bright orange or almost crimson wood when freshly cut, but oxidizes to a darker, rich purple-brown over time - although it stays redder than Indian Rosewood. Slightly harder and heavier than Indian Rosewood it is a good wood in all respects - stable, and easy to work with. It often grows in small groups and is reported to be common in dense equatorial rain forests.

Fooshman 02-13-2018 09:45 PM

I'll take a red one with white stripes.;)b
